Trouble is, the role was limiting in those days. More free reign now.......

Victoria was the classic "little girl lost" with her father murdered by the Daleks, orphaned and then cast adrift through time and space so you could also say that Debbie Watling played it perfectly. Taking encounters with threatening aliens and robots in your stride would be odd but screaming is not. Take everyone's point though on both Polly and Victoria being consigned too often to tea making duties.
I was racking my brains about companions plucked from tragic events. I thought of Nyssa in the Keeper of Traken and (sort of) Sarah Kingdom killing her brother before she joined the crew in Master Plan.
I think we should be grateful for Victoria, Polly, Barbara and Susan because for their broadcast era, they were all pioneering characters. Compare, contrast and shudder at the likes of Adric, Donna Noble (no idea how and why Ms Tate is so popular but it's usually dangerous sticking your head above the trench and speaking your mind about her contribution to Doctor Who), Mel and insert your own choices here.
Has Jackie Lane ever spoken publicly about her time in Doctor Who? She is someone who genuinely got a very raw deal as a companion.
I hope we get to see more of Victoria and Sarah K one day.

If anything it's instructive of how quickly the BBC was changing then, when they demanded that Dodo drop her accent and just a few months later they were fine with Ben's. I shudder to think what they might have done to Jamie had Highlanders been written a year earlier! Although, some of that may have been the BBC screwing with Donald Tosh, he got a raw deal in all that, too.

I felt sorry for bill hartnell. Constant companion changes and producer changes did not help his ailing health i guess

I felt sorry for bill hartnell. Constant companion changes and producer changes did not help his ailing health i guess One has to keep in mind the apx 45 episode a year schedule they did back then in addition to the above mentioned changes. I really don't think any of the recent younger actors could do what he did without the health issues he faced William Hartnell deserves a lot of credit for what he did.

When any former MEs are back with the BBC having been checked and lovingly restored we'll know which eps are still missing. All the half whispers and challenges to duels are not helping that process run to its conclusion. Get yourself home, slap WoF or Enemy on the DVD player or iPlayer and remember how bloody lucky we all are.
