Well Im hoping Im so old and senile that when anything does eventually materialise, I can sit and dribble and watch it over and over, forgetting it each time, so that each new time, its new again.

Enemy of the World (way underrated) and Web of Fear (somewhat overrated) have proved to me that you really can't judge from audios and tele-snaps. However, I'd suggest that The Space Pirates is probably a lot more interesting and enjoyable than its reputation might suggest, and that Series 5 as a whole might actually be inferior to the less-well thought of Series 4... with Fury from the Deep being perhaps the biggest unexpected dip in quality. In fact, Enemy and Web revealed one thing to me that I'd never really picked up on before, and that was that Victoria Waterfield was wet, irritating and a very poor replacement for Polly! Not something I had considered prior to seeing those stories on iTunes. I'm inclined to agree about Victoria, Alan. Basically, she makes tea, screams, and gets caught by the baddies so she has to be rescued. This is one reason why Deborah Watling left the show. She couldn't go anywhere with the character. I think Fury From The Deep will prove to have an impressively strange atmosphere, even if it turns out to be less than brilliant, when and if it's found.

Female German (to another): "Don't cry, Paul Vanezis would never allow that." Classic!

They were different times and the BBC were merely a part of a wider, sexist society.

Remember what Barry Letts, Terrance Dicks, and Katy Manning said about her audition for Jo? She had to scream. Sadly, most people thought that was believable at the time.

To be fair, classic Who was very often horror in the guise of science fiction, and given the tradition of horror you might want a leading lady who could scream convincingly. But if a character overdoes the shocked reactions it quickly becomes boring, or even silly, like the chap being attacked by Cybermats in Wheel episode 3. (If cybermats actually BIT their victims they might be scary, but all they do is flash their eyes!)

Victoria starts out well, IMO. Tomb, Snowmen and Ice Warriors give her plenty to do and lots of character development. I particularly like her interactions with Thomni and the way she seeks out Padmasambvha (sp?) in Snowmen. Then it's almost as if the writers run out of ideas for her. Richard
