I think we're really skewing the definition of missing. It's like saying Enemy of the World is still missing - simply because it's original format doesn't exist. No different to IOD 1. We have it in a form at least ! I looked at it again recently and didn't think it was that bad...comparatively. I think if that one needs recolouring then some of Ambassadors and MoE do too. Even Inferno, Claws of Axos and other Pertwee's could do with a second coat of paint

Is it true that Invasion of the Dinosaurs ep1 was wiped/junked because someone got it muddled up with ep1 of "The Invasion" ? No, it's an old fan myth.

Is there a plan in place to produce a commercially acceptable colour version of Dinosaurs E1, does anyone know, whether it be colourisation by hand or otherwise? Ian Levine contacted me about the possibility of finding a way to restore the missing blues throughout episode one. I said I'd look into it. Several months ago I ran a few manual colourisation tests on the opening sequence and had fairly good results. I have them in front of me now. However I'd need much better source material to work with in order to take it to the next level. Getting the colour mix is tricky and even though it's only the 'blues' that are missing you have to work with a much wider pallet in order to get something that looks natural. The time that goes into colourisations is phenomenal. 'Mind of Evil' took long enough doing one frame in five, let alone every frame. BabelColour (Stuart H) said he'd never do another full episode - the work involved was staggering. As for me, I think I could get Dinosaurs 1 into a much better state - not Evil good, but much better than it currently is. Hopefully and dare I say 'probably' better enough for a rerelease. That being said if I did it, I'd do it in my own time as a fan project. Doing it as a fan project means it's up to people to go and find it, I'm not forcing it on anyone. Anyone that's ever worked in a creative field will know how much damage one negative voice can do, even when surround by one hundred positive ones! I've actually only been coloursing for a couple of years so it's something I'm always working on. Practice makes perfect. I should add, my current work on the 60's era is very much a look that's natural to me. Like an artist that picks a certain way of painting something, everyone has their own style. I like a vivid semi'technicolour'look to the older stuff but working with IofD would require me to go for a much more natural style. Not impossible, but comes less naturally to me. If you haven't seen my work, here's a recent example. A short clip taken from an episode of Dalek Masterplan: itsfarfrombeingallover.com/?p=76Thanks for the info. I hadn't seen your colourisation work until now and I have to say it is truly brilliant!

You could argue the same about every episode. There are numerous possible definitions of what we could consider "missing". There is the extreme of having nothing left, like a fair few episodes were until audio copies were tracked down. Then we have the ones with no visual evidence left (the fourth episode of Marco Polo being the most notable example). Then we have the ones that have some bits and pieces left but are still for the most part "missing". Then you've got the ones with bits and pieces "missing" but for the most part it is still there. Then you have this category of two episodes without any colour. Next one, which is really starting to nitpick is the ones which are missing their master broadcast copies (by which point you are down to 7 60s episodes and have lost much of the Pertwee era). You can then eliminate those 60s episodes by wanting the original filming footage (which also knocks out many other stories from all over the shows history right up to the 1996 movie).
We have everything in one form or another, the extent we define it to be "missing" to is all relative.

Certainly sounds interesting. I've always wanted to give it a go and I've been meaning to get a new hobby for a while. How about a skype lesson?! You'll need the footage you want to work on, Adobe After Effects and a bit of patience!
Skype might prove problematic but I'll certainly have a look into alternatives.

Invasion Of The Dinosaurs is crying out for a special edition. Truly the only bad thing about it is the dinosaurs, sadly. It's a wonderful story, The Doctor made out to be the villain and on the run from the military, great action sequences. If they CGI'd the monsters and recoloured Episode 1 it would be one of the best Pertwee stories. Loved it as a kid and still love it today.

As you say it's still loveable with the current FX. Let's get the Crusade animated before starting CGI FX on Dinosaurs. Unlike the later stories that have optional new FX I would assume by the very point of this thread (that only a BW copy exists) that the pre-fx sequences (if any) dont exist . Further the fact that e.g. the pterodactyl is a puppet that is in shot with Pertwee etc means that it would cost a lot more than we could ever hopefully expect the BBC to fork out. You could throw in a couple of wide shots of new CGI but it's not going to happen. Especially when you consider that they originally didn't budget for a full manual colourisation.

I saw it first time around, in colour, and it certainly isn't as bad as some might make out. It's really a four parter masquerading as a six parter but the film/location material is pretty good and in that area it compares favourably with others from the same era. What's really surprising is just how good Liz Sladen is - her second story and she's carrying the plot in some areas. Those who see her best work as being with Tom Baker should look at what she did with Jon Pertwee. You can look back forty years and see why, without doubt, her reputation was deserved. Episode 1 is a bit like the curate's egg, good in parts. I can certainly see benefits in recolourising some scenes and mixing this with the colour recovery.

I won't argue that she's better with Jon than with Tom, but she certainly sparkles right out of the gate. I really wish Letts and Dicks (and to a lesser extent, Pertwee also) hadn't phoned in so much of Season Eleven quite as much, it would make appreciating the Sarah/JonDoc relationship much easier.

This site reckons Jon Pertwee was phoning in from quite early one, or at least just playing himself rather than putting on a character. www.grke.net/anorak/
