It's The Daleks all the way for me too.
This story and the production values (I'm still wowed by the sight of that Dalek City) were light years ahead of its broadcast and it kickstarted the whole show.
I also really like Keys of Marinus (wet suits and flippers aside) if we're allowed a second choice.

The Daleks redeemed DOCTOR WHO. The daleks did secure the show. Its funny how one moment can change what was looking a show that was going to fail maybe.

Just noticed that someone has FINALLY voted for the Reign of Terror! That was probably me. I can't understand the lack of support!

Not sure why 'The Sensorites' always gets a bad rap. I quite liked it. And yet 'The Aztecs', which seems pretty popular, I never really got into....

Yes, I'm astonished that the Aztecs has rated as highly as it had in this poll. And call me thick, but I've just realized that the first season had an even split of historicals and sci-fi.

I must admit I was a bit shocked that the Reign of Terror stayed at 8th place for so long because its not a bad story. I think if we got episodes 4 and 5 back, it might have gotten more then just two votes. Its also one of those Doctor Who stories that I seem to enjoy a bit more every time I watch it!

I'm glad episode 6 isn't missing. And the unique closing credits with their silhouettes against the starfield is just awesome!

It really is a blessing that it isn't missing!

My favourite story from season 1 has to be The Daleks (Dead Planet,The Mutants etc). Not only does it have a great rolling narrative,it has some wonderful set pieces-the discovery of the Magnadon, the food machine with it's Mars Bars that taste of egg and bacon but also William Hartnell's superb performance.I love his moral misjudgement in deliberately stranding the Tardis and it's crew on Skaro but also his mental fatigue/breakdown when he discovers the planet is riddled with lethal radiation and his lines almost sound like a clockwork watch running down-'we're..obviously..in..the..midst..of..an..advanced..civilized..society..' and '..if we don't get treatment,we shall all die..yes..we shall all die..'Stunning and I must have watched it about 50 times and counting!

It was a tough decision, but I voted for The Daleks. I really like Keys and Aztecs, too, and all three are among my most watched stories. But Daleks has it all, and really set the tone for the series that was to come. Truthfully, I like the entire first season a lot.

Aztecs, With the daleks close behind.
Mind you, if Polo comes back it could sweep the whole thing!
