No votes for the Reign of Terror yet... I wonder if its down to the DVD animation of episodes 4 and 5? The animated episodes have completely raised my appreciation of ROT.I can't wait to watch that story again because of them! I think that the animation for Reign was under-rated. Ok, it's not brilliant but after watching it 2 or 3 times, it just becomes part of the story.

Epiosde 1 of An Unearthly Child is an absolute masterpeice in introducing the the series. It gets my vote.
I especialy like the Doctors Analogy of comparing humans to savages and William Hartnell's opening performance makes me chuckle throughout.
I loved The Doctors speech in the second episode "When you touch the alien sand and hear the calls of strange birds in the sky"
Thank god that An Unearthly Child is not missing.

The first Doctor had a lot of great speeches and witty comments that make William Hartnell's performance really, really good. A lot of my friends don't give WILLIAM HARTNELL and PATRICK TROUGHTON a chance.

A lot of my friends don't give WILLIAM HARTNELL and PATRICK TROUGHTON a chance. In a way I can understand that Stephen. I know when I got seriously into Doctor Who's heritage at the age of 17, the idea of watching anything before 1980 seemed a bit too "old fashioned" and dated to me. And the idea of watching black & white Doctor Who had no appeal whatsoever. What changed it for me I think was seeing so many of the old Pertwee episodes broadcast on UK Gold at the time, many of which were shown in b&w (The Daemons, Ambassadors, Mind of Evil). Also that I was immediately intrigued by the story of the missing episodes, of which Tomb was at that point the most recent return, so that was top of my list to view once I'd seen all the colour episodes. Ultimately what sealed it for me was 1) UK Gold suddenly got the rights to screen all The Dalek stories (which they hadn't had before) so went back and repeated all the Hartnell & Pertwee ones (they were onto early T. Baker by this point) and (2) The discovery of the telesnaps which DWM then started printing and they looked fab. I never really looked back from that point, and I genuinely don't even notice that the Hartnells and Troughton's are B&W anymore. It's all just "classic" TV to me now

I Love the Sensorites. Though it was the first Target Novel I got! It's just so different. Marco is ok but like most stories more than 6 episodes long the ending seems to rushed. Micheal,although I love Hartnell's era,The Sensorites is one story I just can't get into,similarly The Gunfighters.Can you give me some pointers as to how I can appreciate The Sensorites more?What do you love about the story?My DVD of the story is still sitting on my shelf completely un-played! I'll try.. You have to have a certain amount of nostalgic feel for the story first. I read the Target novel when I was 8 and loved it. I could imagine in my head what the characters were like. I like the atmosphere and the helpless feeling among the crew in the first two episodes. The sensorites also pervade a great sense of menace. I know for many that, that is where the interesting parts of the story end. (with the first 2 episodes.) for me the intrigue among the sensorites and the mystery of the illness carry the story over the last few episodes.

It's the first time a lot of repeating motifs for the show are in a single story: - scary looking aliens who are not baddies;
- humans-v-aliens-humans-are-villains plot;
- motivations for the badness through insanity;
- aliens are like humans with internal politics;
- aliens who have an intrinsic capability quite different to humans (dalek capabilities were built);
- dripping sounds in dark caves (there were caves in AUC, but no dripping ;-) );
- probably two episodes too long.
All it's really missing is a quarry, and you'd have the essence of 60s Doctor Who in six episodes And it's possibly the only sci-fi show to prominently feature molybdenum, which is element number 42, which is the answer to the Ultimate Question...

It was a tie between Edge and Sensorites. But I picked the latter, I love everything about it. The snail-paced nature of the serial works to its advantage, its my most watched story from Season 1. Although if we could separate 'An Unearthly Child' from the rest of the serial, it would take top spot.

I'll be honest I find the First Season a bit hardgoing, I'm not exactly a spring chicken but I was too young to remember Hartnell and Troughton. I love The Aztecs and the first half of The Daleks but the one that I can watch over and never get bored is An Unearthly Child. Seriously a four part story about going back in time to meet Cavemen and teach them how to make fire sounds like the worst kids tv ever but it's absolutely complelling and is never corny, it so could have a train wreck. I have a feeling Marco Polo may overtake it as my favourite. I'll let you know once I've seen it?!
