It's a tough one for me, as apart from Marinus I've not re-watched any of these recently. I've always like Marinus as a story, even though most do not regard it as much of a classic, so nearly went for that. But it's tough to look beyond The Daleks I'm afraid.
And I'm in complete agreement with Matthew. As Marco Polo is the only completely missing story from Series 1 (and indeed the first 2 series!) it seems unfair to judge that one or compare it to the others. It has such a huge mythical status about it, it almost overwhelms every other story in the season. How can you compare a soundtrack, word of mouth and some choice stills to a living breathing story that's been watched and dissected multiple times, warts and all? I know I can't!

I Love the Sensorites. Though it was the first Target Novel I got! It's just so different. Marco is ok but like most stories more than 6 episodes long the ending seems to rushed.

I was torn between aztecs and Marco. I voted for aztecs because I've actually seen it.
Daleks are great characters, but I felt the first story was very slow although landmark.
If it was my favorite episode, it would be unearthly child

I've always like Marinus as a story, even though most do not regard it as much of a classic Me too. It has a certain charm about it, especially in its economy. It's the first 'quest' story, it's very clever about how it arranges for actors to have their weeks off, and it gives each character a chance in the spotlight. Like Edge of Destruction, I think it gained from its rush nature. And it's also evidence that Terry Nation works best when someone's working closely with him -- David Whitaker in this case, but also Dennis Spooner with Masterplan.

Marinus. Just rewatched it. Even when reading it - the quest narrative stands out. I would love nu who to return to Marinus. How did the destruction of the uber key machine affect the world? (Even though it hadn't actually worked for awhile). Great TV.

(Even though it hadn't actually worked for awhile). Great TV. Although the current era to me isn't so hot (but I'll give Capaldi a chance, regardless) I agree with you Marty, Marinus is an interesting place worth another look. In some ways, I see parallels with Traken - gee whiz machinery that apparently makes things "nice". But if you put all your eggs in one basket, what happens if someone drops it, swipes it, or it develops a hole that can't be fixed so people have to suddenly live without it, suddenly? I'm reminded a little of the Gort solution in The Day The Earth Stood Still. Are they a flipped switch from becoming Daleks or the like? Moreover, the idea of risking an entire civilization on a machine that will be relied upon in perpetuity to determine how they behave, seems dangerous and to some, even immoral. Attitudes and cultural views about things change over time, it's just how things go. But this machine could well be a roadblock in development, on purpose. I could see a shifty neighbouring planet (or perhaps the Usurians) selling this technology and then reaping the rewards without the slightest peep of protest from the hoodwinked. For all these reasons, I can see oodles of story potential in a return to Marinus. Grant Morrison went there in Colin Baker's time in the DWM strip, though for different reasons. Perhaps Big Finish has or will give it a crack? As for fave Season 1 story, I'm glad the survey's open until next year - plenty of time to watch them all again to refresh. So many good choices, not an easy question! But unless Marco Polo is returned, out of justice to the others it has to be a choice from the existing stories for me. Original Fans who saw it already - half your luck!

Paul. I wonder if we would have returned to Marinus if the Nation penned Voords had taken off like the Dakeks...

Micheal, although I love Hartnell's era,The Sensorites is one story I just can't get into, similarly The Gunfighters. Can you give me some pointers as to how I can appreciate The Sensorites more? What do you love about the story? My DVD of the story is still sitting on my shelf completely un-played!

The photo stills I saw as a boy of the Sensorites looked sensational. I''ve revisited this story several times on DVD but I've not managed to stick with it so I'd also love to know why some people like it.
One of my favourite Hartnell's is still The Web Planet which I know splits opinion. I loved the Target novelisation and Zarbi with men in tights aside, I still enjoy it. I know it's not from series 1 but just want to find out if I need to take a fresh look at the Sensorites.

Paul. I wonder if we would have returned to Marinus if the Nation penned Voords had taken off like the Dakeks... Good point! Maybe the not-at-all-Daleks would have had surfboards for zipping over the acidic waves?! Actually I was just thinking how much the creepy tone of Masters Of Luxor (the BF audio adaptation, with William Russell and Carole Ann Ford) reminded me of issues posed by Marinus. Even the idea of how just it is to create a machine/system to lift such an intolerable, perhaps unworkable burden, forever - and what that might say about that society, however well-meaning. Yep, more than happy to see Marinus revisited, if it were given due thought and substance!

The Reign of Terror was one of my favourite Target novels :-) Does that count? Yes!!! Of course the targets count! I've got the Reign of Terror in my Collection of target books, but I haven't read it yet! Also, if you can find a copy, read the novel of Marco Polo, it's a lot different to the TV story but it's still worth a look
