Clutching at straws ... I recall a TV series from late 60s but the name has gone from my memory and probably the archives. Does anyone remember a programme that involved a couple of British officers (naval? - because the uniforms were I think tail coats like Nelson's time) imprisoned in what I think was a cell in a tower or turret and that looked down into a courtyard or stable area. The courtyard / stable bit is important because at some stage these prisoners attempt to escape in a balloon. I don't think I'm getting confused with several films from that era that involved hot air balloon adventures (e.g. Mysterious Island) because it was something that turned up regularly and began with a title sequence involving lots of billowing smoke (from a battlefield or just simply for creepy effect?) out of which the characters would emerge (actually I'm not sure about the characters emerging but somebody did!). Accompanied by the theme music of course. The series was dark and gritty as children's drams tended to be in those days (a la Desert Crusader and Sexton Blake). Could have been foreign or British production. Any thoughts welcome!

thanks for response. I just recall an escape involving, ultimately, a hot air balloon - but my memory about the serial is fragmentary...

A BBC production.

Thanks. I've just searched using Triton and there is a link on the internet to ... this Board and a query (in 2009) about this very series and a link to IDMB. The outline of the story describes 2 British naval officers sent into France during the Napoleonic Wars to find out what the French are up to with submarines. So looks like John Green's earlier response about subs and gods was spot on and your Triton was the missing link. It sounds very much like what I was hunting for but sadly the 2009 Board update shows that the series is nowhere to be found. Frustrating but at least I wasn't raving!

I remember this series from around 1967/68, I think.
The thing I remember is that they were investigating a top secret project called 'Pegasus', which I think was where the hot air balloon came in.
I always thought Pegasus was the name of the series. A quick look on the internet doesn't bring anything up for this title.
Perhaps I am getting confused with an individual episode title?

I have never forgotten this series. I'm guessing 1969/70. I can still hear the theme tune in my head (orchestral, 'Do dobee doooo, do dobee do dobee do). In the final scene, I picture the two heroes escaping from some sort of castle in a hot air balloon. The lead characters wore similar hats to Lord Nelson. Does this ring any bells?

It sounds also a bit like Return of the musketeers from 1989. But that's probably 20 years too late.

Could it be an ep from 'Virgin of the secret service' ?
