Yes, and the drugs (I suppose at that time amphetamines rather than hard drugs) had come via the management indirectly.

Absolutely that way, Tony.
I remember when Robbie Williams signed with EMI for £80 million advance and he was ecstatic about being so rich. I couldn't see it myself: I just saw someone who was now £80 million in debt to EMI, which needed paying back from his 20%, or however much he was on, before he saw anymore. And out of that, he had to fund his management, legal team, support team etc etc etc as well as his lifestyle. I think the deal included tours and merchandising too, so he couldn't count on any further record company support for when he hit the road.
