They did three April Fool's jokes - the colourisation of The Tenth Planet, The making of The Pheonix Rises and recently, the "lost" regeneration test footage.

Sometime in the first half of the Nineties, I read a rumour--possibly in a fanzine--which stated that the whole of Seasons 4 & 5 had been located in (go on, guess...) "Africa". I don't recall believing that one at the time and I have similarly little faith in its present-day counterpart. Still, I'd love to be proven wrong on that score.

I'm pretty sure the TP colourization wasn't an April Fools joke, they were pretty serious that TP4 had been found, even down to Michael Craze having recorded linking material for it.I think it was them that had been fooled. They did a follow up article a few months later having realized that the returned tape was blank but even then still believing that TP4's return was somehow imminent!

Didn't I read somewhere years ago about someone remembering a colour test transmission film used by the beeb with a clip of Hartnell's doc in colour being used in the 60s? Was this a hoax, are there any records of it having happened, it obviously doesn't exist now?

The colourisation was an April Fool. The return of TP4 was reported as genuine, and was a separate unrelated story. The issue in which the news was reported went to press too late to pull the story, but they were able to squeeze a 'stop press' line of text down the side of the page.

Doctor Who Monthly ( as it was known then )also made up it own rumours if I remember.Something about colour test transmissions being made ( in-house ) of Patrick Troughton episodes anyone...? This might be part of the same rumour as the Hartnell colour test transmission. Does anyone remember?

That wasn't DWM, but it was genuinely thought for a while that by some fans that some latter Troughton's might have been made in colour (although broadcast in b/w) using the new colour cameras in a run up to the series changing over from b/w. The Dominators was often mentioned in this respect. There was, of course, no truth to it.

If shakey memory serves, there was a vague rumour that a station in Canada had found a seven part serial.
People put 0 and 0 together and came up with Evil of the Daleks.
Apparently this was investigated and the Canadian station confirmed they had a 7 part story - in colour.
The rumour became then that Evil of the daleks was shot in colour but broadcast b&w
However , it turned out to be Inferno

I'm pretty sure the TP colourization wasn't an April Fools joke The colourisation was - even down to the date in the project code at the end of the article. That was a separate thing, and Michael Craze did indeed record links for the story.

Have there been any rumors that have actually turned out to be true? I can't think of any other than maybe when Tomb of the Cybermen was returned and I think the BBC had said it was a redundant copy of An Unearthly Child? I also remember reading an article in a magazine right after that about the Savages had been found in Australia which obviously did'nt happen. I don't recall hearing any rumors though before Dalek Masterplan 2 or Airlock and Underwater Menace 2 were returned.

"Have there been any rumors that have actually turned out to be true?" Well `Faceless Ones' 3 and `Evil of the Daleks' 2 for sure.

Did not know there were rumors about those two episodes before they were returned? Curious how accurate those rumors were if they named the episodes or just that a couple of episodes had been found?

Ron, if I remember correctly there was a Doctor Who Convention and someone claimed that they had those particular episodes and was trying to get people to buy tickets to see one or both of them in a local theatre. I don't remember the particulars, but many people thought it might be a hoax and the screening never took place. However, behind the scenes some negotiating was going on and I think members here may have actually seen the proof of their existence and helped in their recovery. I have very fuzzy memories of reading all about this years ago. I'm sure there are people here who much better knowledge of it than I do.

Ian held onto his prints of the The Time Meddler just in case other collectors had things they wanted to barter, but this was known by people within the BBC.

here's one thing I want to know, i heard that shortly before tomb of the cybermen was announced, some fans were trading an incredibly ropey copy of the story.
any truth to that?
