Gives you a good idea of what performances on TOTP were like.

Only just discovered this YT account myself yesterday. Seems to be posted from the original source (AVRO). Over a 1,000 clips to view - well worth subscribing to. Excellent stuff.

Brian Eno? Seven Deadly Finns? My mouth fell open seeing that one in this bunch... never knew that existed, let alone that Brian actually promoted it on TV!
Great to finally see another clip of "Mouldy Old Dough" too!

Notice the quality of the audio too, much lip synching but far superior to those embarrassing TOTP performances (well that's my opinion anyway) ;D www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6TUjV9piGAThe clips are available for licensing at 500 Euros each and then that's only for a year. Much of the archive was shown during 2001/2002 on Ned1 & Ned 2, Dutch TV. The Toppop DVDs have been out some time, also some clips are downloadable from the following (legal) website. Their is also some ZDF archive on their too, mainly from DISCO & the Kultnacht Specials. www.vip-files.net/hq_music_video/en/dvd/top_pop_vol_4/www.vip-files.net/hq_music_video/en/dvd/kultnacht_disco_starparade_vol_1/Through AVRO.tv you can license material from the archives of the AVRO. Browse through the material online, watch the footage, download a free watermarked comp file for your offline editing and buy and download a high resolution file of the desired footage".

Can anyone point me in the direction of an episode guide to Top Pop, by any chance? Also, I'd be interested to know the contents of the DVD releases with a view to buying.

Here is a link to the Toppop DVDs >>> www.bol.com/nl/p/toppop-1-2/1002004005651478/I am not aware of any web episode guide for Toppop, however there is a list of all performances and dates in the Toppop book which is in the Dutch language (although the database is in English). www.bol.com/nl/p/avro-s-toppop/666775767/

In some of the clips I've watched I've noticed that at the end of the song everything fades out and you can often see a studio audience applauding although no audience is heard, just the music fading out. Is this how it was broadcast or has there been some tampering?

The Family clip is quite curious and it reminded me of the familiar clip of Black Sabbath from the same show, and probably the same time. It appears more like a documentary shoot since we see the cameras from behind as if it's all behind the scenes. The Sabbath clip used a similar style though minus the cameras (but with some stagehand strolling past behind) - I'm assuming then that the actual original TopPop broadcasts of these two songs no longer exist and what we actually have is some kind of documentary footage, similar to that Hollies clip of "Listen To Me" where we see them performing the song for "Colour Me Pop."
Can anybody shed any light on this?

Toppop was all lip synching, better (and stereo) sound tracks have been overdubbed. The Family (Tuesday 22nd September 1970) & Black Sabbath (Tuesday 29th September 1970) studio performances are from the original broadcast according to the Toppop database although the Family footage does look more like a rehearsal (it's from episode 1). I notice discrepancies with the transmission dates on the Avro Toppop Youtube channel, Toppop season 1 (1970-1971) was broadcast on Nederland 1 every Tuesday at 19:30-19:55. Does much exist from 1970 - 73 it would be even better if there were more clips from this period though i'm not complaining a really great selection of 70s music.

These Toppop clips ARE for sale, you can acquire a license which is 500 Euros per clip, per year. The footage rights would still be owned by the Avro. I notice the Supertramp clip has been deleted due to a complaint by Evergreen Social Media Associates. I think only Richard Groothuizen knows what exactly does reside in the archive, I know all the Toppop insert films exist (when the artist/s couldn't attend the Dutch Toppop studio). A big chunk of 1975 was erased by accident. I recommend you watch the John Miles (Music) 1976 clip and the David Bowie (Heroes) 1977 studio performance. The David Bowie has live vocals over a pre recorded backing track and sounds excellent, far superior to the Top of the Pops studio clip.
