And I tried a second time. The company is still registered but appears inactive. The Director is listed at what appears to be a domestic address in Bucks.

Decca are now part of the Universal Music Group. Anything would be with them.

I believe Decca used to have a tape archive in central London, somewhere around Goodge Street but it's changed hands 2 or 3 times since so the tapes and archive could now be almost anywhere. Either way, tapes were scattered anyway with some Bowie Deram multitrack masters being discovered a few years ago in a forgotten archive near London Bridge which were discovered in a lengthy search for multitrack tapes by The Move.
I'm doubtful Decca would have many films in their archive - EMI certainly have next to nothing from before the mid 70's video and film wise.

I remember watching this promo on TOTP in the 70's well but I remember it being shown in the late 1990's on either VH1 or Onyx (the German? Music channel) so was surprised to say the least to see that it is classed as missing. There was definitely a Bowie lookalike completing visual gags with garden gnomes such as the gnome service gag with an old wireless. Could be worth checking into?

Announced today on the KAL facebook group:
'NOT A DISCOVERY: The Laughing Gnome. "The Laughing Gnome" is a film (for the song by) David Bowie, directed by Tom Taylor and was made for Top Of The Pops episode 500 tx: 4.10.1973. It was shown once and never seen again. This pop promo made for the BBC has been listed on our Facebook site in recent days as a worthy item to find. A holy grail for pop fans. Sue Malden, ex-BBC guru, tells me it does indeed exist and has been held in a commercial footage library for 30 years. The BBC have chosen not to ask for a copy to be returned to their own archives, because it is safe and secure elsewhere. 16mm colour film.'
So it's current existence has been confirmed.

Thanks AJ. for confirming it. The few of us who remember it were beginning to think it was a false memory- however I am pretty sure it was shown a couple times and not just on the 500th..IIRC Bowie was not too pleased to see it climbing the charts when RCA was trying to sustain Bowie's contemporary image with a re-release of Space Oddity.... a master stroke by Deram to get some cash back on their loss on Bowie's first album.

Yes thanks AJ. Just to confirm it was shown multiple times during its chart run & again during various pop retrospective programs in the following years, and surfaced again on Onyx in 97/8.

Exactly Richard it's all very well the BBC saying it's safe and secure elsewhere but what are the chances of ever seeing it.
