Being fairly new to the forum, apologies if this question has been asked before, but does there exist a definitive list of instances where TOTP has been wiped, but the audio still exists?
I ask this because I can remember recording TOTP 30-05-74 (now wiped) in the seventies on cassette (I looked the date up on Popscene!). I remember it because the Isley Brothers were played during the chart countdown and Highways of My Life was played in error instead of Summer Breeze which was their record in the charts at the time. In fact, Popscene lists it as Summer Breeze, but the actual record played was Highways Of My Life.
I'm pretty sure that I still have this recording somewhere (probably in the attic). Is it worth me trying to locate this, or is there a copy already in existence? According to Popscene, this was Paul Burnett's debut.
By the way, I recorded this using very low quality equipment - I basically pointed a cheap microphone attached to a cheap cassette player at the television and the quality was very poor and of low volume even then, so I'm not sure what it will sound like now if it works at all.

Hi Mike. Unless others here will correct me, this is definitely not one to my knowledge in existence. Will be delighted if this sees the light of day, albeit in "poor quality" audio or better!

Mike - got to the attic - go directly to the attic - do not pass go - do not collect £200 (just lots of kudos....) Please copy and preserve your tape. If any advice is needed, many of us can help on the Forum.

Mike, I should add that you need to either record directly to a CD or save the audio on an uncompressed file - whatever you do, don't save it as an MP3! Don't use any sort of noise reduction on the tape deck you play it from - that can be sorted digitally afterwards.

I run Digital Compact Cassette decks, that automatically align the heads when transferring. The handy thing with this now defunct format is that it boasts a "coaxial digital out" socket, which means it transfers digitally the tape signal onto my CD recorder, therefore true "lossless". Mike, you may have gathered by now, there's excitement in your recording which is rapidly boiling over. This period of Pops is one of the most sought after of the mid 70s. Oh, I have parts of a wiped TOTP as well.
This cassette I bought at a boot sale, for some reason intrigued me as it had odd scrawl over it and was the same brand of cassette as I used to use for home recordings of mine own songs..
Anyways, from memory it had some bagpipes, John Miles, and some other stuff. It's lousy quality as it's obviously taped off the telly, incomplete, but thanks to the Popscene website, I have narrowed it down to two episodes (fairly sure it's "Scotch on the rocks")
Anyways, you mean that Sparks' "Looks Looks Looks" is lost? Say it ain't so! (one I have a very clear memory of!)

Didn't Bruce Forsyth record his daughter's appearances on TOTP with Guys and Dolls, so is it possible he taped part of this programme due the his own appearance?

Many thanks for the responses , after which I thought I’d better do my duty, so I duly risked life and limb to retrieve my tape cases from the library and you will be pleased to know that I managed to locate the tape in question. Apologies for the long post which I am about to subject you to!
There is good news, and there is bad news. The bad news is that I only recorded part of the Burnett edition. I thought that I had recorded the full programme at the time, but it seems like I only recorded the songs I liked. In fact, I can imagine myself lying in front of the TV pressing the start stop button on the microphone when appropriate. I was so efficient, unfortunately, that I cut off Burnett’s announcements (pity I didn’t know then what I know now).
What is left on the tape is as follows: Judy Teen – Cockney Rebel Wall Street Shuffle – 10CC I See A Star – Mouth & McNeil Sugar Baby Love – Rubettes.
All the above have audience applause but no Burnett.
That’s the bad news over, but there is some better news. Burnett’s chart countdown at the start of the show still exists in full. As I mentioned earlier, Highways Of My Life is played in error instead of Summer Breeze.
I also found when I went through the tape, that I had also recorded segments of another wiped TOTP, this one being 24-08-73, introduced by Tony Blackburn. Ironically, I have more of this show than the Burnett one and I kept more of the DJ sections on this one. This is what I have:
TOTP Theme Dawn – Gypsy Rose Barry Blue – Dancing on a Saturday Night + TB intro First Choice – Smarty Pants + TB intro Chaos – Down At The Club TB Intro only (song not recorded) Drifters – Like Sister and Brother (no intro) Roy Wood – Dear Elaine +TB intro Limmie & Family Cooking – You Can Do Magic (no intro) Hudson Ford – Pick Up The Pieces (no intro) New York City – I’m Doing Fine Now (no intro)
Note – I need to double check a few things, as I listened to the tape in a bit of a rush but the order above is different to that shown for the show on the Popscene website. At the time of recording, I would have recorded the above sequentially in the order they came as I didn’t have the capabilities to do anything different to this with the equipment I had so the Popscene list may not be in the correct order.
Finally, also on the same tape, I had a small amount of extracts from TOTP of 31-08-73 another wiped one, this one introduced by Noel Edmonds. I have the following: 10CC – The Dean and I (no intro) Roger Daltry – I’m free + NE Intro (as you would expect, Noel does not miss the opportunity to do a John Inman impression in his intro) Stealers Wheel NE Intro only (song not recorded) Wizzard – Angel Fingers + NE intro
Note – that again, the order is different to that shown on Popscene.
This is all I have, I think. I do have a lot of other tapes, but I don’t think I have any more TOTP sadly, as they are newer tapes, although I will check through them over time.
I did come across one other tape with 3 songs from 27-2-75, but this does not appear to be a wiped one. Again, I think the order of songs on my tape were different to that shown on Popscene.
I would like to digitize the Burnett etc tape as soon as possible, just in case any disaster strikes! In fact I hate to say it, but the tape got stuck in the first machine I put it in this afternoon, but fortunately I took one for the team and had to break the cassette player to get it out undamaged!
Ray/Rob/Chris – I would very much welcome advice on how best to transfer this to get the optimum quality. I don’t really have any high tech equipment as such, so advice would be very welcome. The recording is not of great quality, due to the equipment/method used to record, but I would like to get the best possible output.
Finally, I’m very happy to share this once it’s digitised – would Youtube be the best way?

Too true. I think this isn't the first time that the official running order has proved to be a bit different when broadcast.

What are the three songs you have from 27/2/75 Mike??Only some of the show exists in the archives i believe. As a Cockney Rebel fan i'm hoping that you have Make Me Smile from that episode. It's a different version to the one that gets shown on TV on a regular basis. Great news about the 30/5/74 show as well with a repeat broadcast of Judy Teen. Look forward to hearing them!
