Just finally got a hold of The Series 1 dvd, after seeing many funny clips in documentaries about comedy and just like I always do, I go to the "Extras" section first, and Check out these "lost episodes".
Does the BBC not even hold Kinescopes of them? as, at least on the Region 4 Pal DVD, they are from VHS's of Australia's Channel 7 Broadcast.

I have often wondered this myself.
Living in Australia I know that 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' screened on 3 networks during the 70's and 80's, ABC first, then Channel 7, later Channel 10. I wonder if these episodes could still survive in one of these stations archives.

Oddly,Lostshows has the whole series surviving, with no note on format problems. www.lostshows.com/default.aspx?search=hot+mum It was generally known a few years ago that episodes were missing,so I was a bit surprised to see the complete series one on DVD! Ah.So it's just two episodes that were lost-1:4 and 1:6? I thought it was more, but that was from remembering the documentary years ago.I'm glad that copies,at least, were found.(In 1988).

They're must've been other people who taped it, or even Kinescopes in Aussie or NZ, as when the series started, we both were still in Black and white.

Lostshows is correct, there are no missing episodes. We removed the ref to a domestic format because it's been remastered on to digibeta, and people kept emailing us to offer us copies of the sell-through dvd! lol

But presumably the episodes from VHS are cut - they haven't turned up uncut copies, have they..?

The two 'lost' episodes (A Star Is Born, It's A Wise Child) were video recordings recovered from Australia albeit edited for commercial purposes.

Hi,Chris. I never know how to phrase it.If I say "Lostshows has them all existing" it sounds as though I'm telling someone they're bloody wrong! This seems to be one of those cases-the Ghosts of Motley Hall is another one.I think?-where the original message got well established, and the follow up "don't worry, they're found" is yet to be received.I can remember looking at the 'complete' first series set of IAHHM and thinking "Oh Yeah?".

Hi all - I know this is rather late but I can give the story behind It Ain't Half Hot Mum - In 1988 Channel 7 showed the series in Adelaide - both myself and a close friend (Dave) taped these every Thursday night. Some time later (can't remember how long but it was quite a while) we got copies of the Kaleidoscope book of British Comedy (Dave is close friends with Peter Tatchell) - remember this is pre-internet days - and to our surprise it listed two episodes as missing from the archives - Those episodes had been happily sitting on our shelves as VHS copies! So the copies that are on the DVD release are the ones Dave recorded. They're cut because Channel 7 showed the series in a 30-min timeslot and removed footage to fit in ads... As we only found out that the episodes were officially missing a number of years after 7 showed the programme, then the trail of what happened to the masters (and indeed the cut material) was very cold. So the eps were recorded in 1988 but were returned quite a long time aftewards. Now if only Channel 7 had the rights to "Who" - We could have had "Power Of The Daleks" just turn up without explanation....cut for ads of course
