From what I can recall - The Beatles inserts were the Intertel videos -NOT the BBC TOTP recordings.

THE MOODY BLUES – Go Now ® SANDIE SHAW – Long Live Love THE ROLLING STONES – The Last Time ® SONNY & CHER – I Got You Babe ® THE ROLLING STONES – Get Off My Cloud ® * THE SEEKERS – The Carnival Is Over * The Moody Blues one has odd lines through it, as does many Kinescopes that were used on the 1991 BBC series "Sounds of the Sixties". (and I'm NOT meaning interlacing, these are actual horizontal lines on the transfer) is 16mm Sandie Shaw - That ones exist's as a "test" version without the audience on 16mm The Rolling Stones ones are both 16mm Kinescopes Sonny And Cher is half Video Tape Half Kinescope, as show on "Sounds of the Sixties" in 1991. The Seekers one is completely videotape.

The Beatles didn't record TOTP studio appearances for Help or Day Tripper either. I'm not sure offhand which Ticket To Ride clip was used (TOTP or the Intertel one, although I think it was the latter) but the TOTP I Feel Fine insert, although being pre-recorded as a t/r, if I recall rightly, was long gone by December 1965.

I've been told that the "Ken Dodd - Tears" appearance was shown in a documentary either a DVD or on TV a few years back.

That's interesting Paul i do recall seeing a performence of Tears a few years ago but can't remember where i saw it , could have been a documentary about Ken Dodd , but i'm not sure what show the clip came from , i don't think it was Totps though.

I've had a reply and unfortunately this does not reside at the BFI. It's just an archive listing not a physical holding.
If anyone has seen that clip of Ken Dodd - Tears that was supposed to have been included in a documentary could they please check to see if it was the totp appearance, unfortunately i've misplaced the reference i had to it. The person was pretty sure it was the totp performance though.

Re the reply from the B.F.I whats the point of them listing the program if they dont have it in the archive. Looks like all the 'finds' at the B.F.I could be a wild goose chase

Looks like all the 'finds' at the B.F.I could be a wild goose chase Agreed that this makes research very frustrating, however once in a while there are finds to be made such as 22/11/73 recently found in the BFI archive.. I was assured that the 'majority' of items listed in the 2 BFI databases are physical holdings and only a few like 25/12/65 are just listings. It's always worth checking

The BFI have just emailed me and stated that they don't have the episodes listed on their database that I enquired about: 1/1/1964, 24/9/1964, 2/11/1972, 30/11/1972, 13/12/1973. Not surprising I guess but still disappointing that it was a complete dead end. As I think others have mentioned, the BFI advise using the unionsearch.bfi.org.uk/ facility which contains only programmes they actually hold rather than just listings.

Just to reiterate, if Ken Dodd's performance does exist it would be nice to see it and great to confirm it does.
So if anyone has a copy of this programme, please let me know.
Apparently, the clip may come from a private source. To recap, the Beeb do not have it and neither do Channel 4.

It's weird Ray - I distinctly remember the ICA in London showed it in a season of British television season in either 1985 or 86. I seem to recall their prints came from the BFI. If someone has the stamina, an ICA programme (or Time Out) from those years would probably confirm it

Which is probably not news to anyone else here, but I thought that in the 60s totp was broadcast and wiped as a rule. You learn something every day don't you. Would these performances have been specificaly retained for a christmas repeat or where the episodes hanging around for longer than I presumed? It would be nice if this turned up but I am sceptical for now! Jackie Trent is actually a personal frustration. Apart from the 1964 Big Night Out (same show as The Beatles) and the 1966 Eamonn Andrews off air recording, there seems to be no other footage of Jackie in action that I've encountered from the 60's. Is there any more footage of her from this decade by this fine singer? You'll be pleased to know Phillip that clips do exist of Hatch and Trent singing 'Little Help From My Friends', 'Who Am I' and 'Don't You Believe it' from Aussie TV filmed in 1969, broadcast in Jan 1970.

It was just sheer persistence based on very little fact and all personal memory that dragged us down a wayward trail which led to clips such as Jean Genie and Stuck In The Middle being located in the end! It's probably the case that the Dodd clip was glimpsed - it's now just left to find out: a) who holds it and b) if it's from TOTP or not (and if it's not, is it still a missing item?)! Maybe the BFI do have this one, albeit wrongly / badly labelled or uncatalogued.
