Made submission to Lostshows.com for the following 8 episodes of Sounds Of Britain. Kaleidoscope contacted bfi who have confirmed that they are all held on 2-inch Quadruplex, VHS and Digital Betacam. 1. 2/11/77 Made In Wales HTV. 2. 16/11/77 Makkers and Takkers Tyne Tees. 3. 15/2/78 Folk In The East. Anglia 4. 8/3/78 Teeside Tyne Tees. 5. 5/7/78 Yer 'Tiz' Then Tyne Tees. 6. 6/12/78 Folk In The East. Anglia 7. 2/3/79 Saints Alive HTV 8. 17/5/79 Ep 79 HTV. 90 episodes were made, but even with the above 8 now located, there are still 65 episodes Missing, so keep looking everyone. Stone the crows.I spent the best part of a week looking for these a year or two ago, though some others turned up for myself and others.Would it be fair to say that there's still a van-load of stuff not catalogued at the BFI? For those who weren't around at the time,it transpired that the BFI had had shows, uncatalogued for 30 years or more, which they finally listed online without any fanfare. We made a pretty good trawl of everything and found perhaps a couple of hundred 'missing' programmes.I got the impression at the time that that was it.In fact, the reply we got from re 'Sound of Britain' was "The BFI say they only have these:...".A little more co-operation would be helpful. Which is ignoring your contribution,Simon.I can imagine the hours you must be putting in searching, with Ray,when he can get online, and the others. It's partly your successes which spur me on! I'm envious about these.

I'm envious about these. John, the bfi database website says that their "database is updated daily", so that 'year or two ago' it may have been the case that, 'that was it'. Since then, others may have been catalogued and added to the listing. So I guess, from time to time, it pays to check to see if any more have been added, as it seems to be a developing situation, as more material is checked and added. Hope this goes some way to explaining things.

Simon,as you know, some things can be found, safe, and in an archive for 30 years without anyone being told,I think I'm right in saying that the pilot of 'A Sharp Intake of Breath' was held at the BFI for decades before it was catalogued along with hundreds of other shows. It seems as though no paperwork was exchanged when television companies made bulk donations in the 7ps and 80s,and then limited resources were available for conservation and cataloguing.I don't understand why there doesn't seem to have been more liaison with Kal,or at the very lest a cross-checking with Lost Shows. So much easier to check a batch of prints on a shelf than use our own 'hunt and peck' method!

Lost Shows.com has Tales From Hoffnung 17.05.71 Missing. This was a repeat. The original airdate was 01/09/65 called The Palm Court Orchestra. From this, 7 episodes of Tales From Hoffnung have been located by me at the bfi. Kaleidoscope are pleased with this, as they were unaware that the bfi had any Tales From Hoffnung. The following 7 are all held on 35 mm and 16 mm. Tales From Hoffnung were Genre: Animation, shown on BBC. 25/8/65 The Hoffnung Vacuum Cleaner. 1/9/65 The Palm Court Orchestra. 8/9/65 Hoffnung's Professor Yaya's Memoirs. 15/9/65 Hoffnung Music Academy. 22/9/65 The Hoffnung Maestro. 29/9/65 Hoffnung's Birds, Bees and Storks. 1965 The Hoffnung Symphony Orchestra.
Kaleidoscope will update Lost Shows.com to show 17/5/71 aka 1/9/65 as existing, no longer missing.

I e-mailed Chris Perry about some episodes of Tales From Hoffnung that were listed on e-bay a short time ago and he replied that after contacting the BBC he was informed by them that they do no longer hold any episodes of the series despite some listed as existing on lost shows. Anyway they informed Chris that it was a bought in series anyhow and were therefore not interested in them.

IIRC a lot also exist as returned export copies, I've heard of episodes with burnt in subtitles, not sure if these were in other languages or special copies for the deaf & hard of hearing.

Lost Shows.com say there are still many more episodes of Rupert missing...so keep looking everyone. Good advice-and that goes for the bfi, too! As Pete Morris said,(June 29th 2012): Rupert and the Buried Silver 31/12/75 Rupert and the Rope Ladder 7/10/71 Rupert and the Magic Ball [French version] Rupert and the Truant 16/9/71 Rupert and the Baby Badger 30/9/71 Rupert and the Witch’s Chariot 31/10/73Panos Rupert and the Bedoozle Man 2/10/74 Rupert and the Golden Egg 16/10/74
Several of those don't show up on a search, at least not through this engine. nwfaunionsearch.mmu.ac.uk/indexAdvanceSearch.dhtmlMakes you wonder what else they have, uncatalogued. Some of those are listed as existing, with burnt-in subtitles. Has it been confirmed if the BFI hold clean copies?
With 'Ruperts' and 'Sounds of Britan' continuing to turn up,it looks to me as though there could be a mass of uncatalogued/very recently catalogued material in the archives.Remember, the bfi had the shows which triggered this thread for thirty years or more, invisible, uncatalogued. Oh...and nice one,Simon!
