I found a single episode of Play School on the Internet, which my 4-year old adores ... but have completely failed to find any more. I pondered if the lack of availability (legal or otherwise) was that they just didn't exist anymore. So I looked in lostshows.com - lostshows.com/default.aspx?search=play+schoolAnd it says that's it's complete - 1964-1990. Given what else BBC destroyed, I'm astounded that what must be 1000s of episodes of Play School survive. Is this correct? The wiki article (for what little that is often worth) says many 2" tapes were junked in 1993.

At last reckoning, there were a huge number of Play Schools existing. As Ray says, many are missing but as it ran for so many years, it mounted up a large number of episodes. There are at least a dozen or so for each of the early years (including the very first show) and many more for the later '70s onwards. Adam Lee's wiping of a selection of editions of children's programmes in the '90s notwithstanding, Play School has a good representative selection of it's history - I only wish other programmes were as well archived!
So neither totally complete nor totally missing. I hope this helps.

used to watch these all the time when i was growing up in the 70's. I imagine part of the reason for their survival is that they were often repeated many times so copies were made.Their shelf life was probably longer than a lot of programs as they dont date in the same way

Lots missing. It's a db fault on Lostshows.com
If I type in say one episode of Play School into our bigger db to show we hold it, then it assumes the whole series exists complete. Simon and I are working on a listing to the series that should show exactly what survives, and what was wiped.

Thanks CP. I have a copy of a partial 1982 domestic recording (definitely missing) that will be sent back to you in due course. It's missing the last 5 mins, but....better than nothing.

I have looked in the past for an edition to show my 4 year old, whom I am sure would love it, but I can only find clips and not complete editions...

Paul - the listing that's wrong is from lostshows.com. Chris Perry of Kal, is co-author of the database and it's a rare error. The info regards wiping is here:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_School_%28UK_TV_series%29""Many 2 inch Quadruplex videotape master copies of Play School editions were junked by the BBC in 1993 on the assumption that they were of no further use and that examples of some other episodes were sufficient"" Kaleidoscope have issued a book on Play School, so they are going to know!!!!!!!!!

Is the Internet copy of Play School the one with Derek Griffiths and Chloe Ashcroft from 1978?

No, it's from February 1983. (Reference to torrent site removed). That's a shame, thought it might have been You Tube.... Talking of which, there is a complete one on there (split over a couple of parts) but - and it's a big "but" for me (!) - it's one of those later, editions circa 84/85 when they did away with the Orange House and traditional look and set and went all trendy! I'd happily sit and watch any 70's or very early eighties edition anyday! Did I really just admit that??? Actually, it's one of those shows that takes me back to a happy time of being a young child - something nowadays that seems sooo far away - so it's nice to be able to relive your childhood through an old kids tv programme.... (well, that's my excuse anyhow!)

Paul your absolutely right ,it's great to be able to sit and watch the programmes you saw when you were a child , like you they bring back magical memories and i'm obviously quite a bit older than you , the shows i watched as a child were from the 1960s then as a teenager in the 70s and i'm still watching quite a few of them now as long as there not missing ,and since i've been on this forum i've discovered so many shows that i'd never heard of,so long may it continue.
