Yes, but the cover blurb of 'HOW THE DALEKS EXTERMINATED DOCTOR WHO'S HISTORY' must be the stupidest cover headline since 'PETER DAVIDSON IS THE DOCTOR!' back in 1981!The obvious thing being that the Daleks didn't-it was the short sighted bods at the BBC!

Maybe they got someone from the SUN to come up with the headline! Although it perhaps in part refers to the Dalek episodes being taken off the sales lists and this in turn leading to less stories being sold from Power of the Daleks on.

If it was someone from the Sun,surely the headline would have been "Ain't Gotchya!"?

Although it perhaps in part refers to the Dalek episodes being taken off the sales lists and this in turn leading to less stories being sold from Power of the Daleks on. It wasn't just the episodes. Nation's withdrawal of the Daleks meant that all the merchandise licences were also revoked as of 31 December 1967. That was a big part of the Doctor Who profile removed in one swoop.

Thanks for all the comments, it's been a fascinating article to compile.
The cover headline is, of course, tongue in cheek.
We are aware that the Daleks didn't actually exterminate the 16mm film recordings of Doctor Who episodes. The Daleks are fictional.
It was simply a way to help make a dry-ish subject sound exciting on the cover, helping us to sell copies of the magazine. That said, the Daleks (or more specifically the issues surrounding the sales of The Daleks' Master Plan and The Power of the Daleks in particular) could have contributed to the overall decline in sales of Doctor Who in the 1960s, as speculated by Richard Molesworth in the article. Had this not happened, perhaps more episodes could have had a better chance of surviving today... But who can say for sure?

Thanks,Tom. The memory of buying the first issue of Doctor Who Weekly is there with the first viewing (30th Nov. 1963) of Doctor Who.
I think we're all hoping that there's a very large shoe-box somewhere in Nation Towers with all the Dalek episodes.
p.s.My eldest son says that the headline should have been "It was the Beeb what done it",but I supose that was unlikely!"

Off-topic but I thought I'd comment on Doctor Who Weekly #1. I saw it by chance in a newsagent back in 1979 without knowing beforehand that a magazine had even been launched (!). It was a nice surprise however. ;D
