Originally broadcast in January 1966 this documentary has rarely been seen since. Well here is a link to it and a lot of other rare Donovan documentaries. donovan-unofficial.com/video/documentaries.htmlHere is what the original TV guide said about the programme. Every once in a while along comes a programme that cannot be pigeonholed. This one is not a variety show (although Donovan sings a dozen songs including his "hits"), nor is it a documentary (although it documents Donovan's world). Call it, then, a lyrical evocation of a young man who has found success but treats it casually.

Agreed, it's a marvelous film. Put the boy in a lot of hot water though, and soon after Sgt. Pilcher and his mob came knocking on his door!
I'm wondering if this is Don's own copy? I am imagining the original is lost? Simon

Is that right?!? Well, there's a poser! They're the only likely people to archive it officially so where does it reside. Have you consulted Kal about it?
I do remember reading somewhere (possibly in Donovan's biography?) a description of some of the content of the programme, seemingly from someone who viewed it. So I assumed it was in the archives. Actually, i've DEFINITELY seen short clips from it in something or other in the not so distant past (scenes where Donovan and friends are sitting around a bonfire on a beach or something, where he's strumming an accoustic guitar and singing). Hmm. It's a important and iconic programme. There must be a print somewhere then...

I've just watched 30 seconds of it online - it's a bootleg site, so I can't say where - so it exists out there....the copy - allegedly came from Russia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another thing: has it ever been repeated? I say this as I have the distinct feeling that i've seen the whole thing - possibly in the '80s sometime, at which point I probably wasn't aware it was particularly rare.

Some snippets of material was shown along with one of the RSG episodes in the 80's.
Which is VERY intriguing....as Dave Clark owned the RSG rights by then, and he does not own the rights to Rediffusion....I would like to reaffirm that it was NOT the whole show that was broadcast in the 80's. So, the BFI and Archbuild do not have it....Dave Clark might have (which means nothing in terms of broadcast likelihood....), but....someone in Russia does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

""A Boy Called Donovan
U.K. TV - 1965 - b&w
A documentary about Donovan, quite ground-breaking for its time.
There was a compilation episode called Ready Steady Go: 60s Special on Channel 4 a few years ago that included some of this material (albeit visuals only). ""

My old kal guide lists it as existing. Right at the back in the odds and sods section.
Bits were used on the channel 4 rsg repeats and the docu Sunshine Superman amongst others.

In a issue of a Donovan magazine that I have there is a review of this documentary. The copy that was reviewed came from ebay and it was missing the opening credits - same as the copy that the link leads to. So this could well be the same version.

Some snippets of material was shown along with one of the RSG episodes in the 80's. Ah, yes. That must be where I saw the clips! I knew I wasn't imagining it. It does sound plausible that Dave Clark could possibly be the physical the owner of the programme. He also seems to be in posession of a copy of Round The Beatles (another Rediffusion programme) - although, as far as I know, Apple would own the rights to this outside the UK - and released part of it on VHS in the '80s under the guise of a RSG special edition. So it's possible he may have inherited other items from the company when he took on RSG. This would be a significant recovery if a copy could be archived with the B.F.I. (on behalf of Archbuild) for posterity.

If Dave Clark's got the film, it isn't coming out any time soon, from what I've been told - in my lifetime....and, if he did own the copyright, who would have released it in full, I'm sure. Would have sold better then in the 80's than now, probably. He may have it, or just excerpts of it. At any rate, there is no accessible copy in the UK, and the online version is all we have.
If I recall didn't the Beatles (i.e Apple) put the block on Around the Beatles being remarketed after it had hit the shelves, although copies continued to be sold as they weren't returned and destroyed.
