Haynes was often referred to as ITV's nearest equivalent to Hancock and that's probably a good comment as he's got something of the same "everyman" quality. This is probably where the amateurish / just walked in off the street perception comes from. It looks like a deliberate and positive quality to me though rather than a something negative or lacking in his abilities. I always liked Haynes personally (a great overlooked comedian until now) and it's good news not only that his shows still exist in quantity but that they're finally being made available. I agree about there being too much of the guest artists in some of these earlier shows but people's view on that may change as in gets further into the '60s and a few pop acts (including the Stones) start creeping in!
