Im really curious how good a job big finish does on the animations. Im really curious how good a job big finish does on the animations. I think they will be really good ~ they care about the quality. Another selfless plug but I am excruciating close to finishing the first part of my reconstruction of episode one of The Celestial Toymaker. I'm using animation here and there but hope for the most part to use 'real' footage that I've digitallty manipulated. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYA0MyN2d7kIf only I had decided to start work on Galaxy Four ep 1!

im looking forward to seeing your recon. please keep me posted.
Dont be disappointed that you didnt do galaxy 4. At the moment, only a few minutes is in circulation. When the new episode arrives, you would probably be better off doing that one after the new episode arrives.

I must admit I was disappointed to read Daniel Hall's comments on the release of these two episodes in DWM this month.
He didn't seem to be treating them with any sort of importance at all. I mean, I know Doctor Who has moved on, but it still seems to me remarkably unempathic to the wishes of "classic" doctor who fandom.
These are not like other orphaned episodes needing a home here or there whenever 2entertain gets round to it. I was really unhappy to learn that we would have to wait over a year to see them. Tomb of the Cybermen came out on video about 6 months after the find was announced, and I think the Lion and DMP-2 were pretty much the same.

The Lion came out six months after the recovery was announced, However, due to BBC Video's hurry to release the episode, the Restoration Team couldn't do the work they wanted to to reduce the tramline scratching.
Day of Armageddon was released 11 months after the recovery.

I would happily accept a delay in the release of these two episodes if I thought it was necessary in order to do the proper restoration. Within reason, anyway.
I've just for the moment lost faith that the people at 2entertain understand just how important these episodes are.

Its a bonus that anyone will get to see these episodes at all! If I have to wait a little while for the DVD release then so be it.

No it isn't.
Please let's not turn the clock back twenty years when people would argue there was no point getting stuff back to the BBC because they'd only sit on it and probably lose it again.
I know there is no legal obligation, and I really do not want to open up some crazy can of worms about what obligations there might be. While there is good will, however, people will try to work with the BBC to get material back to them.

Richard Whatever you say mate I don't recall the BBC stating that they aren't planning to release these episodes and I dont recall them announcing that they would be storing them down the back of the sofa with their collection of crisp packets where the cat has a nest. If you know better then good for you I am happy in the knowledge that I will be adding these to my collection at some point. I just hope they aren't released as an extra on a Sylvester McCoy DVD as that would really spoil my day.

While there are still complete stories to be released it's better to put these two towards the end of the list. This will give the RT sufficient time to do a good job and, of course, there might be more discoveries/returns.

Richard It's obviously better for everyone involved if they see the recovered material in the best possible state. Sure I'm tempted to see Airlock and UWM 2 RIGHT NOW. If there was any possible way of me seeing those episodes RIGHT NOW, I'd take it. But from a commerical release standpoint - it's really better on both sides if it's all been cleaned, repaired, and made to look as good as it possibly can. So I'm happy to wait while the restoration wizards do their magic.

We then saw the same footage but with edits spliced in, followed by the first pass at cleaning up the joins. There is still a lot of work and additional clean up before the episodes are anywhere near-ready to be made public. I too am happy to wait...

I remember seeing the screening of Crusades 1 there, shortly after it was recovered. Really magical. I can definitely tune into the emotional side of wanting to see something immediately after it's recovered. The wild surprise and thrill of an episode just APPEARING is quite potent. When I first saw the announcement, my first reaction was "Oh dear, is this another hoax?" followed very quickly by sheer joy and excitement. I had the flu and a temperature of about 103, but I totally forgot I was ill for about half an hour after hearing about this recovery. But yeah, definitely by this point everyone should be able to step away a bit from the initial shock and sort of take into account the state of the episodes and appreciate the work that needs to be done. Airlock is missing the last 22 seconds or so, isn't it?

It's just a little galling that the recently recovered Bowie footage was shown on telly and the recently recovered Sky at Night featuring Arthur Clark is being given away with the latest Sky at Night magazine.
I completely understand that these episodes need cleaning and restoration for a commercial release, but would it be impossible for the episodes to be shown in a rough cut version to those that care? TBH the clips shown after the recovery announcement looked distinctly viewable to me. Was it that these clips had already undergone some restoration? A few tramlines wouldn't detract from my pleasure in seeing these down at the BFI.
I just hope that if we do have to wait many months to see these episodes that they are released sympathetically. Don't want an 'Earth Story' style Mash-up with a McCoy release as mentioned earlier.
And thank god it was Airlock and UWM 2 that were found and not 'Tenth Planet 4 or 'Power1'. Otherwise I think peoples' patience threshold would be tested somewhat more.

Day of Armageddon was released 11 months after the recovery. I am not experienced with film restoration. Depending on how beat up a film print is, it could take several months to fix one episode? If they recovered multiple episodes for one story in that condition, I can understand why it would take so long to get a release.
