Possible Antiques Road Show Request?

Hi everyone, first time posting, I've been following this forum as a guest for a year or so and the recent finds of the Galaxy 4 & Under Water Menace episodes have raised my interest enough to register.

Apologies if this idea has been discussed before but I've been trying to think of ways to broaden the awareness of missing TV material in general and of course Doctor Who in particular to the public at large, last night I was watching the Antiques Road Show on BBC 1 and suddenly remembered that the production team usually feature a short piece from one of the experts being asked what they would most like to see found or brought to the show.
The show often features a wide variety of items from 17th century furniture to old toys and pop culture items and the finding of an old Doctor Who TV episode would perhaps qualify for inclusion, correct me if I'm wrong but I think this would give the BBC a chance to feature a request for anyone amongst the general viewing public and collectors alike who thinks they may have lost TV material to come forward and get in touch. This request would be within the context of the programme and not at the expense of crucial air time between other programming.

The Antiques Road Show is a popular TV program has been getting around six million viewers per week and I would venture to suggest gets a slightly different demographic than Doctor Who & many other cult TV shows so may be watched by people who have no idea about missing achieve TV material.
This could result in a lot of people contacting the BBC with information on material that is NOT missing but you would have to accept that on the basis that one major find would make the exercise justifiable.

Perhaps if the right person (Ralph Montagu/Paul Vanezis?) were to approach the shows producer maybe something could be arranged?

Anyway just an idea!

But why is this self-promotion considered so crucial? Look at the sparse 70s continuity on Youtube and ask yourself why we need stuff like the "consider yourself" trailer currently showing on BBC1. OK so the Christmas idents are a tradition and should remain so but this is rubbish.

Because in the 70s there were three channels. Now, there are hundreds.

it's a good idea. the show often features collectibles to do with famous people, tv shows and movies so a request for archive film is not outside the show's interest.

also they have shown requests work. they recently turned up an extremely rare piece of jewellery by showing it's design. a viewer recognised it and came forward.

That's actually a pretty neat idea - a clever way to promote and educate many millions on the case of missing episodes, and still fit within a reasonable context, thereby justifying it's inclusion.

Well, I think an appeal via AR in the UK and maybe US could get some attention but I still think a large find is coming soon and we are all going to be surprised....

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, however looking at the clues in the forum, this is how im interpreting things. Please feel free to clarify if I'm mistaken.

We had two pieces of news recently. One was two VERY nice episodes have been returned. The other, reading between the lines, is that a huge stash of the missing hartnells from africa were destroyed around 12 years ago (which to me is recently also).

Considering the small number of prints out there, if we compare the number of prints recently destroyed to the number found. its not really much of a comparison.

If I read between the lines, most that was shown in central America, have been recovered. I think Paul is saying that he doesn't have much hope for Africa having much (and their major stash appears to be regrettably confirmed destroyed). Its confirmed that Austrailia and NZ's slicing machine did a good job on their prints. So unless there is a place I'm missing, I'm not sure where a giant stash could be.

Keep in mind what was sitting on a shelf 30 or 40 years ago, has probably changed. If I look at any of my shelves, its changed in the past 20 years.

While I'm doubtful of a gigantic who find, the very very positive news is that there is still hope for the return of new who episodes. We've seen that happen recently and .I believe that there are still a few more episodes inches from being destroyed if we don't rescue them in time and I think we should keep looking fervently for that handful,

I think any publicity for the cause is a good one, including Antiques Roadshow, if they will go along with it.

Feel free to add any thoughts or information.

As a BBC man I'd be interested if Paul thinks this idea has any currency? I imagine random people contacting the AR team re Doctor Who might result in annoying them but an insider discussing BBC heritage might get their ear?
