I think - and I'm going on a seven-year-old vague memory here! - it was a close-up on Scrooge as Belle walks past him in the foreground.

Disney seem to have a thing about not releasing live-action movies in widescreen.I'm going by comments on In Search of the Casterways on IMDB.That film's original opening scenes aren't on the DVD,and it's in pan-and-scan. As for The Punch and Judy Man,I was hoping that the DVD with the Paul Merton commentary would have the missing scene,or an explanation of the cut.Does it have either?

According to information supplied at the time, the piggy-bank scene was due to be reinstated on the DVD double-bill of The Rebel/Punch and Judy Man.That's the one with the Merton commentary. It had been missing on a prior solo release.

Sadly the DVD version only has the edited version. The Rebel doesn't fair much better, and despite the lively commentary- the print used is pretty poor. Mind you- the print I saw at the BFI a few years back was in a poor state. Makes me wonder if there is a decent print around. With Hancock still hugely popular, I am hoping someone at Canal Plus recognizes these issues. By the way, I've set up a page regarding the film here. hancockspunchandjudyman.blogspot.com/

I remember the FULL film being shown on Channel 4 late in 1986 (oct or nov) and i recorded it on vhs..sadly it got wiped. I later bought an official vhs which was the edited version...luckily it was reshown several years ago on either film 4 or channel 4 ..i recorded it and have still got it somewhere. I wrote a letter to the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society back in 1989 to ask about the edited version but they weren't sure as to why it had been cut. Either way,it's an excellent film imo

My own opinion is that the cuts were to give it a "U" certificate. I have asked the BBFC for a list of cuts but they haven't provided them as yet. Will let you know as soon as I receive them.

Frustratingly, there's a similar cut which seems to have been made to every release of Norman Wisdom's 'What's Good for the Goose',though the scene (Sally Geeson topless in bed.Pant pant) finally surfaced on Youtube dubbed (into German?). Has the Continental cut (if that's what it is) ever been broadcast in the UK,and does it have any more missing scenes? Information appreciated.

Hopefully we're not too off topic here- (butyes, it was me who started this thread!) No! I am not aware of the continental print being shown on UK TV- but let's not get too excited- it is SHORTER than the censored print that's currently on release and has similar sequences re-shot with Sally G (and Norman W) minus clothes. There was just one missing scene - which I put up on youtube (and has now been removed) which saw our Norm confronting Sally G and her lover in bed.
From what I can gather, director Tony Tenser knew that the film would be cut in the UK and so shot scenes twice- with and without clothes. The foreign prints have occasionally turned up- and I have a German one - but it's nothing to get too excited about!

Simon, thank you for posting that clip.Ever since we'd seen the still in Cinema X (or was it Continental Cinema?) we'd wanted to know more. Not the royal 'we'; a friend and I.Wasn't there more information in "Keeping the British End Up'? I've just sat through 'Eskimo Nell' again with Katy Manning.Yike, what a film. I don't think I've ever gotten through The Punch and Judy Man,but thought I might try the disc/s with the Merton commentary, but not if PAJM is cut.
