There was an episode taped in Australia in 1970 (at Melbourne's GTV-9), in colour, which we wouldn't officially get until five years later. It was an "international" edition hosted by Hughie Green, with local star Bert Newton assisting. A clip was used in a 1976 TV anniversary special - possible that the complete episode may still survive in the Nine Network's archives. I've searched for that and not found it yet.

explore.bfi.org.uk/4ce2b751dd1a7Reasonably sure that the same clip (although slightly longer) was used on a "50 Years Of TV" DVD release back in 2006. My copy's out on loan, or I'd check... Another clip from the episode is on a DVD retrospective of Bert Newton - just saw it. Hughie's not on camera in the clip, but you can hear his voice. I have details of the taping date and Australian TX date - will post them as soon as I find 'em...

Very interesting, Mark. Thanks. It kind of confirms my view that the ABC t/r archive that Canal+ hold has not really been catalogued. I would expect some supposedly missing material to turn up if it was. Hopefully Haunted and Mystery and Imagination to start with!

Just found the bit of footage I've been referring to, and uploaded it. youtu.be/nd1GEDx1E_AAs previously mentioned, a different clip was used in a recent DVD compile, leading me to believe that the entire episode may exist.

More info:
The Aussie version was three episodes - first two were heats, third (the colour episode) was the final. The winner, Johnny Christie, went on to compete in the UK version.
The series debuted locally at 6:30 p.m, Saturday March 11th 1972.
A contact tells me that GTV-9 had archived 2" quad copies of episode 1 and episode 3 (as tape H-132, listed as “No 1” dated 6 March 1972, and tape H-097, listed as “No 3” dated 1 April 1972). He's not sure if they've been transferred to Digital BetaCam or where they're now housed...
