... But that's not what the teletaper was, which was open-reel. I do recall the exact TV Times article and another page related to the same machine, but can't find links to any of these now (they're in bookmarks I've long lost between PCs). I dimly remember a news item in the early/mid 1960's showing a domestic VT machine - it appeared to be mounted directly on the top of the TV set, and was open reel with what appeared to be 1/4" tape (on 7" or maybe 10.5" reels ?). I remember that the reels went round very fast ! Would that have been a Teletaper ? There was such a machine seen in an ABC programme from 1966 (and featured in a clip from C4's TV Heaven of that year, as presented by Eamonn Andrews and Billie Whitelaw). It sat on top of a cabinet. Would this be the machine, by any chance?

It was Jimmy Tarbuck, not Muriel Young, who was quoted in the TV Times piece as saying "It's a great idea, wish I had one, I'd tape girl thingy Cat Willum" (edit: "girl thingy Cat Willum", indeed! Good job Mrs.Slocombe doesn't post on here) Pat Phoenix apparently said "I'd like to buy one to record my favourite stars - especially Morecambe and Wise", Andrew Gardner sayeth "they sound as if they have a definite future in home entertainment, particularly from people wanting to preserve moments of television history, like Telstar", Sir Robert Mark said "I'm convinced they're a major contribution to road safety", Janice Nicholls spouted "It's smashing, think of all those exciting pop shows you could record", and Bernard Braden stepped in with "it would have great use for me in recording programmes I normally miss when I'm working on my Saturday night programme". The page from the TV Times I've seen says that they are giving away "two more this week", so it must at least be the second week of the competition, and there was another the following week. OK, the Sir Robert Mark quote wasn't in there, but the rest are accurate.

Would this be the machine, by any chance? No I think that was a Philips using half inch or 1 inch videotape? The Teletaper was totally unique for the sixties because it used readily available quarter inch audio tape.

I think my post may have been a little misleading - the thing I remember appeared to be integral with the TV set and had the reels mounted horizontally, ie flat on the top surface of the TV cabinet. It was only shown briefly in, I think, a news report (or even Blue Peter), 1962-64ish, possibly reporting the Radio/TV exhibition that used to be held at Olympia.
The reels looked quite narrow, just like ordinary 1/4" ones.
I've a VERY dim memory that they said it could only record 5 or 10 minutes on a reel.

I'd tape girl thingy Cat Willum" (edit: "girl thingy Cat Willum", indeed! Good job Mrs.Slocombe doesn't post on here) Try writing the two words as one word and you won't get "girl thingy" any more!

Thankfully nobody said "I'd use it to record Dr Who - I bloody love that show!", or they'd have had their front doors kicked in by now.

You know, I think I remember one of these machines being demonstrated on some kind of nostalgia programme with Noel Edmonds, probably during the 80s. I distinctly recall him joking that "you'd better switch it off , as I've an awful feeling it's in danger of taking off"! The spinning reels on top of the machine did make quite a noise.
I also recall them playing a tape of part of a cricket match recorded by the machine in the 60s.
Another thing IIRC was that the guy demonstrating it said they came onto the market in 1963!

Thanks for posting the newspaper clip, Richard. I can relax - it proves senility has not set in yet!
