If the BBC have all of these can we not ask the archives to post a list of all the episodes and details?

If only it were that easy, Rob! You're talking about a 30 year old programme that has only had a handful of shows properly catalogued on the BBC Archive database. Some of the entries don't even mention the guests! There may be more information on these shows in the BBC Written Archives at Caversham but access is restricted to accredited academic institutions and commercial researchers who have to book in advance and pay to visit: www.bbc.co.uk/historyofthebbc/contacts/wac_faqs.shtmlI don't suppose there's any chance of them ever repeating the series, but I bet they'd get decent viewing figures if they did...

It's taken me a while but I've finally been able to track down another uncatalogued episode of Pop Quiz: S02E12Broadcast 28th December 1982 INFAX describes this episode as simply: > studio vt, promo vt, cprt film/vt, stills Round 1Dexy's Midnight Runners - Respect Madness - Driving In My Car Shakin' Stevens - Oh Julie Kid Creole & the Coconuts - Wonderful Thing Eddy Grant - I Don't Wanna Dance Roxy Music - More Than This Round 2"In honour of the Beatles 20th Anniversary this year, this is all about the Beatles. I'm going to show each team three pieces of film and I want you to tell me which year the songs were hits." The Beatles - Get Back The Beatles - The Ballad of John and Yoko John Lennon - Come Together The Beatles - She Loves You The Beatles - I Feel Fine The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night Round 3The Lyric Round "All this years hits so they should be incredibly easy..." Round 4Cover Versions "All the songs are Beatles songs but the three versions you're going to hear are not by the Beatles." Round 5Compilation Round "More songs by the Beatles and also solo Beatles, this time performed by them." Round 6Quick-fire Round "The first few questions have been written specially by Ringo and Paul McCartney." End CreditsThe Rolling Stones - Going To A Go-Go (from 1982 world tour) As you can see this episode included the material that was originally scheduled for the Pop Quiz Beatles Special that should have aired in October 1982. Does anyone else have episodes from Series 2 that haven't been catalogued yet? We're still searching for 8 episodes that don't appear to be in circulation...

Slightly off-topic but heads up for all Pop Quiz fans. This from an e-mail i recieved today from VintageTV, not sure when it's on though.
"The Vintage Christmas Pop Quiz Remember Mike Read’s 80s hit music game show Pop Quiz? Well, it’s back. A mere 28 years after it last aired, it has been revamped and draped in tinsel for our very own Christmas Special. Tension, laughter and true grit aplenty, as Bucks Fizz’s Jay Aston, Haircut 100’s Nick Heyward and Slade’s Dave Hill battle against Queen of 80s pop, Toyah Willcox, R&B soul star Geno Washington and pop icon Paul Young to be crowned champions. Tune in to learn their fate and try your own luck at those tricky questions."

'Ah, my mistake: George has the first two tracks on side 1, that was it.' I've no idea where you get your information from .markg, but track 1 side 1 on 'Abbey Road' is 'Come Together', a Lennon song, followed by 'Something' a George Harrison composition. Try and concentrate at the back, there!

Pepper & Magical Mystery Tour, all the cassette versions had different track orders to the LP's. They are all listed here... homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/BtleCas3.html

It gets it's first airing on Vintage TV (Sky 369 or Freesat 515) on Thursday, 15th December 2011 at 8.30pm. If you miss it, it'll be repeated on Friday, 16th December at 11.15pm. If that's too late for you, it'll be repeated again on Sunday, 18th December at 6.0pm. It's an hour long special edition so should be worth a viewing. Now, if only the BBC would repeat the original eighties series...? Perhaps I should email BBC4?

The Jean Genie and Jackson 5 clips we're searching for would also only have been about 8 or 9 years old when they aired on Pop Quiz in '81 or '82! Although they say the memory cheats, and I'm not sure how much this will help in the hunt, being a bit of a Bowie fan I remember seeing the episode of Pop Quiz with Bowie singing The Jean Genie. It was not Bowie in Ziggy Stardust costume at all. I've certainly never seen the clip since, but I recall him looking quite uncharacteristic, and there was no backing band to be seen. I remember the question - funnily enough. It was How many alter-egos like The Jean Genie has David Bowie created. There was a female member in the team and she pointed out "Shakey" (of all people, from Watch That Man). I'm not sure whether they had to name them or not. I wish I could remember when it was - maybe I'll jog someone's memory. Richard

That's not a bad recollection for a show that was broadcast over 30 years ago, Richard! The episode you're referring to is Series 1 Episode 2 and the exact question was: "David Bowie is well known as the creator of some bizarre characters in his songs. The Jean Genie is one of them and while he is performing the Jean Genie, can you think of five other people that Bowie has created?" There were no female team members that week. It was, in fact, Clem Burke, the drummer of Blondie, who suggested "Shakey". If you'd like to see the clip in question I've uploaded it for you here...The jury is still out as to whether a clip of Jean Genie from TOTP was used in a later episode. There are still 11 shows from 1981-1983 for which I have no info on, although it will most likely be on one of the 7 uncatalogued shows from 1982.

Well I'm blown!
I got some bits right, some bits wrong. I guess it was a long time ago.
But you know, the clip isn't what I'm remembering at all. Obviously you have to allow for dying brain cells here but I distinctly remember Bowie almost singing this accapello, close up, probably the verse beginning "he sits like a man but he smiles like a reptile", looking a little greasy if anything. I also remember strange burgundy / purple colours in there.

They seem to have forgotten that Mike Read revived it just 3 years ago on the short-lived, satellite channel, Red TV. Before that, he hosted a 30th Anniversary TOTP Pop Quiz special on Jan 4th 1994, which is only 17 years ago, and the BBC also brought it back that same year for another series hosted by Chris Tarrant. Anyway, the Vintage Christmas Pop Quiz is still showing on Vintage TV. I've watched it a few times now! If you missed it, it'll be repeated Christmas Eve at 6.0pm, and then Christmas Day at both Midday and 9.0pm. It's not as fast-paced as the eighties or nineties versions, but then the ages of the guests range from 50 to 68! Round 1 features eight clips of 60's hits, all sourced from the TOTP archive.

The final airing of The Vintage Christmas Pop Quiz is tonight at 11pm on Vintage TV (Sky 369/Freesat 515). In total it will have aired 16 times during the last two weeks! That's probably more repeats than any BBC programme has ever had over the last 100 years...
