Dear all,
I'm trying to locate any footage of the 1982 Papal Visit to the UK, specifically the visit to Coventry (Bagington) Airport. The BBC didn't keep it and neither did ITV although a video was produced. If anyone has that video or any off-airs or even photographs/home movie footage/cine film, could they please get in contact.
Even better, if you know the whereabouts of any broadcast tapes, that would be very handy.
Regards,
Paul

Good quality off-airs of the 1982 visit are definately held by the RC Diocese of Westminster Education Service. I borrowed the tapes once, but didn't take a copy.
Suggest you either contact them, or the Catholic Media Office.
Both should be easilty found on the net.

It's amazing that a major visit like this so recent was not kept by the broadcasters with both ITV and the BBC slipping up badly. Why was this?

Papal infallibility obviously did not extend to the archivists in this instance....

They definately have the BBC coverage of the Coventry broadcast at the RC Media Office, in very nice quality. It's the one where JP2 gave a long speech in perfect English.
By the way, JP2 was a lifelong Fulham FC supporter.

His Holiness supported Fulham? ? As Cardinal Basil Hume was a Newcastle fan, I can see a possible conflict here. I can see a pub trivia question coming up now....what have Pope John Paul 2nd, David Hamilton, Tommy Trinder and Jimmy Hill have in common. Jimmy Hill, of course is a neat link back to Coventry, for trivia fact fans....he was once Chairman of Coventry.

Haven't all four been guests at a Kaleidoscope event?

To reply to Kate, the tape I borrowed was VHS off-air. The quality was very good for an off-air.

This is a complete longshot but have you tried RTE? They would have been very generous in terms of their level of coverage towards the Pope back then. It could easily have featured on one of their news broadcasts.

I'm sure RTE would have carried a live feed from BBC or ITV. There is a good chance they kept it on professional tape.
