I see they are showing the pilot episode of Are You Being Served on New years day at 7.30pm on BBC2. This is a newly colourised version and wont have been seen in this form for well over 30 years. This follows on from the colourised Dads Army episode that was broadcast last xmas. i wonder what other colourised programs are in the pipeline

'Colorization' is a phony colour process and basically somebody with an electronic paint brush just painting in what colours they reckon they should be.
In the case of the BBC efforts, what you mean is 'Colour recovery' in which the original colour information is recovered in from an encoded source in the B/W picture.

Yes, i'm with you on that one, Peter! Annoying when colour recovery is referred to as colourisation. This is presumably a colour recovered version of AYBS that is being shown tomorrow though. I'm pleased that the process is still being used (and also on non-DW material as well, such as with this and Dad's Army). I'm looking forward to seeing it.
A happy new year to everybody!

I heard that the 'Year of the Sex Olympics' does not retain the chroma dot colour information on the recording available. Even so, this is where the 'colourization' process could come into its own. I believe there are some colour stills from the production. Consequently, much less guesswork would be needed to recover the original colour production.
Yours,

The Goodies has two episodes that only survive in B/W telerecordings it would be interesting to see if these have any chroma info for this process - it's also about time the BBC started releasing series sets!
Another is the only colour Sykes that does not survive that way - 'Journey' from the first Colour series. Another series that deserves more on DVD

As i imagine the process is expensive i guess the will only recolour shows which they think will attract a big audience if they rebroadcast them on BBC1 or 2 or will sell on dvd

I believe there are some colour stills from the production. Consequently, much less guesswork would be needed to recover the original colour production. Yours, I think you're actually wrong on that one (luckily), Andrew! Steve Roberts mentioned on one of the forums not so long ago that the colour information is present on Sex Olympics (whether it's good enough to extract though is another matter, I suppose, as with all of these recordings). I think - by and large - that many BBC b/w t/rs of colour shows have the chroma dots present although not all (as Mind Of Evil 1 proves). ITV t/rs are another matter though; I could be wrong but I believe it's been stated elsewhere that they more often had the chroma signal switched off, so it's bad new there for things like Timeslip and many other ATV shows. The sky's the limit as far as BBC series are concerned though and I had a quick look at how many of their colour shows exist as b/w t/rs and got to well over 100 at a very rough total! This would include things like many Late Night Line-Up (the first regular colour programme in 1967), the last series of The Troubleshooters, single plays, quite a few early '70s sitcoms / sketch shows and such like. Edit: yes, Steve Roberts said this on Roobarb's last year when talking about the Sex Olympics BFI DVD release: "I remember we had to filter it off (the colour signal) when we did the BFI transfer, there was loads of it!"
