Will anyone know if the Manfred Mann Chapter Three group made any television appearances and if any still survive? The only thing I have managed to find on Youtube is a clip from what seems like a movie with Manfred making a vision appearance miming to a Chapter Three number. I have their very interesting second album and wondered if they did any tv. I guess europe would have offered the most opportunities for any appearances of a band of this kind. It would be good to see something of them though.

A very underrated band and far superior to the turgid Earthband which followed, I think, probably due to Mike Hugg's presence and contributions. I've had volume two for years now; it's very good and one that I return to listen to from time to time. I don't know anything about that movie but have wondered myself if they did any TV. I'm not aware of any but it would be a shame if there was nothing at all.

That is a very good question indeed, one which I wish had a more informed response for. However know of some early Manfred Mann TOTP performances that are on YouTube. An general search for these should being up the appropriate clips:
Manfred Mann-Come Tomorrow (1965,TOTP) Manfred Mann-My Name Is Jack(1968,TOTP) Manfred Mann-Semi Detatched Mr.James (1966) Manfred Mann-Just Like A Woman (1966,Bob Dylan Cover) Can only hope and speculate that further material from the mentioned period in this great band may exist in library archives or private collections.Good taste in music I might add Laurence,a stellar album from start to finish.
Cheers,Lance

Of the original Manfred Mann group, while on the subject, there is also a clip of Ha Ha Said The Clown out there and residing somewhere outside the BBC but - just as excitingly - a 1967 colour appearance on one of the earliest Julie Felix shows performing some instrumental jazz material. About time this one was dusted off!

Thanks both for your replies. I just got the first album today and have just been listening to a it. It's as strong as the other one I was pleased to find.
If anyone can help with information on any tv appearances that may have been made by Chapter Three or details of that movie clip though, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

Funnily enough I was watching it a couple of days ago on an old V2000 tape of the best of The Beat Club comps that Central broadcast in the late 80s.

Yes, there's also a very poor quality VHS out there (as with Sunny Afternoon etc.) from the TOTP appearance of this song, which was what I was referring to. It's good there's a Beat Club clip in addition though.
Back on the subject of Chapter Three, I was wondering if they were primarily a studio band? Does anyone know if they did gigs? If not, this might explain why they didn't do much TV either. I imagine they did play live though, with the line-up of jazz people that they had!

The first album was recorded in 1969, pretty much on the tail of the original Manfred Mann group splitting in summer. I think it was released that year too. Volume two was 1970 so they were a short-lived group as the Earthband formed a year later. Any television they did would have been in a very small window of time. I don't suppose anyone knows if they appeared on Disco 2? Not that it would survive but just curious. Europe seems the likeliest chance but there was nothing of them on Beat Club so that eliminates that option. Plenty more euro channels that could have featured them though. I was very surprised to find that Soft Machine did so much television in Europe in the late sixties and early seventies (France, Belgium, Germany etc), a band with similar leanings to Chapter Three. So there's always a chance.

Thanks Kevin. This sort of thing is very useful to me. So they at least did play gigs and even make some radio broadcasts. Maybe there wasn't any tv at all?
Merry Christmas to one and all.

Funny how things turn up when you least expect them to! The new Record Collector reviews an Earthband DVD called 'Then And Now' which includes as an extra what is claimed to be the only footage in existence of Chapter Three in full flight from Australian TV in 1970. I'm pleased to find out there's something surviving and thought you'd be too, Dave. This kinda fits in both this thread and the Pop Acts one so I've posted in both.
If anybody has this DVD or can provide detail of numbers performed by Chapter Three and programme / tech info, could you share it with us here? Cheers.

What other British acts appeared on this show, Dave? I know very little about this one. Presumably the archive is reasonably complete? The Ha Ha Said The Clown clip looks quite pristine and I wonder what other goodies are in there.

DVD contains a 50-mins. performance filmed by ABC (May 1972) in the Roundhouse Theatre, The University Of New South Wales, Sydney and 5-mins. interview with a band. Additionally there is a clip filmed by the Australian TV in 1970. Manfred Manns Chapter Three mimed in studio "One Way Glass". This is one of three (known to me) videos of the Chapter Three. Two others are from French TV-Show "Tous En Scene" (October, 1970), where the Chapter Three performed "Snakeskin Garter" and "One Way Glass".

Very pleased to hear this, Sergey. Many thanks for telling us! I presume the Tous En Scene appearance still exists? So Chapter Three are represented a bit better than first thought and the comment that the Australian performance is all that survives is clearly wrong (happily). This one will presumably be colour too.
You say there are three videos. Are you counting the two numbers from Tous En Scene as two appearances or is there another as well? I was just wondering. Whatever, it's fabulous news for a Chapter Three fan like myself. I really hope we can get a chance to see this material sometime. So far as I know, these appearances have not surfaced anywhere as yet though.

Laurence, yes, of course, footage exist in the original excellent quality and in color. As far as I know, some "Tous En Scene"episodes was rebroadcast in the 90's by Italian TV-Channel "Jimmy" (some record from the broadcast on VHS and circulate in this form).
By the way, all the Australian stuff on the DVD - in a black and white. Also (much to my chagrin!) DVD-publishers added too much contrast in the footage with a view to supposedly "improve" video.. But it turned out that they have worsened it a few (to my taste, of course)...
