Ta Don. What a valuable tool that BBC sessions catalogue is! I would love for the tv archives holdings to be available like this. Amazing what's on the net if you know where to look.

A very interesting thread about my favourite group of all time. :-)
But to get back to post one.
Has this German documentary been identified?? Is it going back to the BBC? Or has anyone told Tull's management so they can find it?
I'm only curious because it would be good to see it back at the Beeb.

Get on to it, Chris! I can see it as a potential recovery on the Kal 2010 list...
Seriously though, it always confounds expectations when yet more TOTP clips are identified as existing in far off (or not so far off) archives! I reckon more of the programme must have been distributed than is commonly thought. If you put all these orphaned clips together, they'd add up to several hours of material and would comprise a wonderful "Lost TOTP" DVD set if the BBC would retrieve them.

I have no idea where to start Laurence :-) TOTP is not my field, that was Richard's love.
If I was in Germany I might be more help, any takers? If we know the name of the show, and who made it, then the BBC can try to find it...

Anybody in Germany or with German connections that can help with this one? I'd like to see any missing TOTP back in the archives.

I've seen this clip now 20 times. No idea which german show could this come from . The german comments sound like a typical german documentation. I guess it could be WDR - production. Don mentioned that it could come out of Hits a gogo. If this can be confirmed then a contact to the NDR should be made . NDR and swiss tv produced some time Hits a gogo together. There must be material from Hits a gogo in Hamburg, as I saw a documentation about Les Humphries this year where Hits a gogo clips shown never seen before. Does the guy who uploaded the clip does release any further Information ?

Frank - I don't think this came from Hits-A-Go-Go. The contact I have at BR Music tells me that there are 2 Tull performances in their archives:
Jethro Tull Sweet Dream 3'53 Hits A Go Go 10-12-69 Germany FA Jethro Tull Titel nicht bekannt 3'36 Hits A Go Go 17-06-70 Germany FA filmeinspielung
It looks like the source of these clips is Germany and so I wondered if they had also used the TOTP clip of Sweet Dream but the full version. Maybe the clip had been acquired via Germany but was still TOTP footage. It's a long shot but you never know.
I've requested some stills or a sample of each clip but I've not heard anything back yet. If anyone has any contacts at NDR then please see if you can find anything out about these appearances.

Im pretty sure that this clip is from beatclub late 69 or early 70.I have another clip of them playing witches promise from beatclub from one of the first beatclubs to be broadcast in colour.Although this is in black & white the background camerawork and the groups dress seem to be identical.I shall dig out my old tape and check again. My apologies if im wrong

Thanks Kevin. I got the complete Beat Club box sets as a christmas present to myself and so haven't looked at them yet to check. If the Tull clip is from Beat Club, then it'll be on there (although the episode guide I have for the series doesn't mention an appearance).

Hi Laurence,
in the late 60's editions of "Beat-Club", Radio Bremen was working together with another ARD station, WDR, who supplied little films of news from around the world about new groups, fashion trends, teenage crazes etc.
As producer Mike Leckebusch used a lot of little "gimmicks" and "video tricks" to put them together, this could be such a film. Have a look at the beginning of the clip where the picture is build up out of a "swirled" kind of square.
It's just a thought though.
Regards,
Oliver.

I was wondering this myself if the Tull clip was from Beat Club rather than from Top Of The Pops. But if Laurence says the Beat Club episode guide does not mention the song being on, I suppose it can be ruled out. What would help is if someone could trace the documentary programme itself in the country of it's origin. I like to get to the bottom of mysteries.

If anyone has any contacts at NDR then please see if you can find anything out about these appearances. I've phoned the NDR about this matter and they told me that the abbrivation "FA" stands for "Fernseh Allianz", this used to be a distribution arm of "Studio Hamburg GmbH", a television production company that used to work and still is closely working together with NDR Television. The FA has now been renamed "Studio Hamburg Distribution & Marketing" (the same company that also distributed and remastered the "Beat-Club" Box-Sets!) and they are probably archiving the "Hits A Go Go" shows that were co produced by NDR television. The "Hits A Go Go" series has not officially been available and according to NDR-TV the Swiss Television only has a few episodes in their archives. Studio Hamburg told me, that the BBC has to contact "Studio Hamburg Distribution & Marketing" personally as they were not allowed to give any information to private people like me. So, if anyone of you has contacts to the BBC, please tell them to contact: www.studio-hamburg.de/index.php?id=301maybe they are interested to research the clips themselves or find out if any of them are the missing clips from TOTP, though I doubt it. Regards, Oliver.
