The amazing thing about 'Waterloo Sunset', one of THE greatest pop singles of all-time is that it survives as a Beat Club performance only from 1967..... Long live those Germans!! The treatment these seminal bands endured to their music and their time in getting to those studios, dressing immaculately, looking cool as f**k was to be wiped forever. Criminal. T.

And the Scandinavians, Europeans and Americans too, Thomas!
When you talk about Kinks losses, the Colour Me Pop is the one that makes me go arrggghhhh! Just to see them at that time in colour on video in the studio, playing those songs. At least there are the Julie Felix performances from around then to enjoy. Being a Kinks fan, I would really love to see a dvd collect all this material in one place.

Yeah there is just that one clip of Waterloo Sunset and NO contemporary performance footage left for "Dedicated Follower". There's no contemporary footage of "Days" either, though the "Pop Goes The 60s" clip from 18 months after the singles release (with a new bass player and longer hair!) is closeish.

Yep Dave and AJ.....so sad and I agree on ALL those points but I must say that there HAS to be promo's of 'Waterloo Sunset' and especially 'Days' no?
The video for 'Starstruck' is one of my all-time favourite 60's vids because there they are!! The Village Green line-up in all their twisted beauty. I know 'Starstruck' was a major European release but you'd think they'd have shot a promo for 'Days' at the same time.....?

Ahhh! I love that starstruck promo, it just captures the spirit of the band perfectly. That should soooo be released to a wider audience. Yeah I think that there must be more promos out there somewhere!

I don't think they shot promos for everything, which is why there are gaps for certain hits. The famous Dedicated Follower is a notable missing one although there's a Pathe film clip for the obscure Wonder Boy (additionally, the sole TOTP appearance for this one amazingly exists in a European archive). I don't think promos were made for (for example) Autumn Almanac - although the TOTP clip again exists - but there is the one for Dead End Street. Sunny Afternoon, one of their most famous songs, again didn't seem to have a promo made for it (although there is a kind of promo of them playing in the snow made for - I think - Belgian TV). Waterloo Sunset is similarly lacking. The Kinks seemed to make less promos than other groups of the time, for some reason.
Ironic about Days though. One of their best songs and it's lucky there's a clip of it at all from Pop Goes. They made several appearances to promote the song at the time (including an appearance on Basil Brush) but they seem to all be gone. For prime footage of Village Green era Kinks though, the Julie Felix appearance is the crown jewels for me!

I agree on every point there Laurence but I must disagree regarding the 'Wonderboy' promo, as I think it's definitely a promo!! In my estimations anyway.
We are talking about the clip were the band are playing beside a ladder(?) and there's stock footage of the sea and birds flying etc...
Looks like a promo to me. I have the TOTP clip of 'Wonderboy' too, though it's pretty poor quality and dreadfully out of synch.

Yes, that's the one but you'll find a poor viewing copy on the official sales website alongside all the other Pathe clips (I forget the address offhand). The Wonderboy TOTP clip has been released on a DVD music compilation although I forget the title. Someone here may know it.

The Wonderboy Pathe video was included on the 1980s Kinks home video that was released in 1985: (http://www.kindakinks.net/videos/video-virginbio.html (later reissued wiith a new cover in 1993 to tie in with the "Very Best of the Kinks" compilation). Here it is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjL0N2PhwmcNote it's an edited version of Wonderboy: the running time of is minute less than the full record as performed on Top of the Pops:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFIncSHnl-U Re: The "Dedicated Follower" video, we discussed this on the forum a while ago, and although a few 80s/90s Kinks biogs talk about there being a video with the band "falling in and out of Carnaby Street boutiques", I'm doubtful that such a promo feat. the band was ever made, and they are in truth misrembering this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Usg3yOc8kUinc. on the 1995 TV biog "I'm Not like Everybody Else", and, inferred by one of the commentators on the Youtube to be made by Barry Fantoni (which I find reasonably likely). As you see, if features someone going into various boutiques but not the band themselves! It's also possible the band are in the full version of the video but doubtful.

In regard to the kinks dedicated follower of fashion promo/video.There definetly is a film from around 66/7 of the band in and around carnaby street as was used in a 1990s kinks bio on channel four titled my generation.Their were several bios featuring kinks small faces animals and several others that i cant quite remember.I have a copy on videotape somewhere and it features probably around 1 to 2 minutes of the promo. It starts with ray walking by some shops looking in the windows and a roadsign nearby of muswell hill.Further in all the band members are shown having their hair done in a boutique.Ive often hunted on youtube for the full video but to no avail.Anybody else remember it.

The footage in the hairdressers is from pathe news. Dubbed onto the song? relying on my memory here. Saw Ray at the Symphony Hall last night and he was brill. Don't forget how hard they worked; maybe 2 albums a year, 4 singles, a couple of eps, tv appearances on RSG! TYLS and TOTP. Foreign tv appearances. The endless interviews, the tours (home and abroad). So maybe they did not have time to do promos for all singles.

Didn't know about release as I was talking about the TOTP Wonderboy clip being on a DVD compilation! All the same, it's interesting to know what's out there.

I've seen that documentary and know both of the sequences you talk of; both are from 1965, and neither were promotional film for singles. The haridressing stuff is as noted below, a pathe news film, while the Ray stuff is some kind of interview. It starts with a sequence of him walking down the street with the record of "Well Respected Man" playing in the background and titles of all the sogns he'd composed up to that point superimposed.

Yeah guys I have ALL those Kinks video's from the 80's. It was/is SO frustrating that they cut some of the real gems on those releases (idiots), 'Wonderboy' and 'Starstruck' being the MOST annoying..... Surprised to hear the 'Wonderboy' clip is PATHE! but the 'Dedicated..' clip that you're refering to is DEFINITELY PATHE! synched (kind of) up with the track. One of those videos did have the 'Apeman' promo in full though..... T.
