I'm separating this topic as a new thread away from the TOTP one and condensing to the essentials (unfortunately there's no way to re-post them under individuals' names so ignore the fact that each post has my name at the side!). Even though Beat Club is not a UK show as such, it's a parallel to TOTP and does contain a lot of British pop acts. Therefore, I reckon it's a subject that deserves a thread to itself. So feel free to carry on posting on this subject, folks...

Again, we have SO much to learn from our German Buddies. MASSIVE demand to release whatever editions of TOTP are left in the archives. A German friend has just sent me a large batch of officially released editions of BEATCLUB. 3 or 4 complete shows per disc. Absolutely SUPERB. Shows ranging from 1965 to the early 70s. Dinosaurs at the BEEB......WATCH AND LEARN !!

Hmm, if these shows are complete, then they are probably from the officially released 3-part box-set that is available in Germany since last November and that has (nearly) every single original Beat-Club broadcast between 1965 and 1972 on it (each box-set contains eight DVDs, so there's 24 in all).
The only thing that is missing from some of the original episodes are about 15 promo-films by the Beatles, to which Radio Bremen didn't have the permanantly rights anymore and which therefore had to be cut out of the shows mastertape (strangely enough, the films were shown last year as part of a two part Beatles-Special on "Vinyl" as well as on a special last christmas on NDR/Radio Bremen-TV. Oddly enough one of them, "Get Back" was repeated quite often during the 90's and in 2003/2004 in the "Beat-Club Rockarchiv" series by Radio Bremen).
There were 83 shows broadcasted, only three of them were not in this set. The reason for this was simple:
Two of the shows were compilations (Best-Of Beat-Club) from parts of Beat-Club that were shown before (No. 9 & No. 23), the third (No.13) was completely compiled from promofilms to which Radio Bremen did not have the rights anymore.
Also, Beat-Club No.13 was missing from the archive and was only recently rediscovered (probably from a private VHS-tape as the quality was not like the digitally remastered shows in the the DVD box-sets ?). It was broadcast this year on Radio Bremen TV as a special during the programme "Vinyl" (on 10/05/2005) and it will be repeated on the 13th of August, 2009 on "Eins Festival".
The groups that are featured in Beat-Club No.13 are:
Simon and Garfunkel, Lovin´Spoonful, Tommy James & the Shondells, Manfred Mann, Sonny & Cher, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Walker Brothers.
Best regards,
Oliver.

With the Beatles promo films, they may have had the rights to still show them, but not to ISSUE them on DVD, that would be the main issue here. It would be very interesting to see a list of the ones shopwn on vinyl - and also to see if there were any differences from the versions that are currently doing the rounds on the collectors market, even though I feel this is unlikely.

Will set you back €165 plus postage, though. A review of the first set indicates some performances were unclearable and were cut. There's a tracklisting for the first two sets (not the third, sadly) so you know what you get before you buy. Here's one of the German find-dvd alternatives: dvdpalace.dvdiggle.de/digglebot_palace.phpGoogling 'preisvergleich dvd' will give some more.

Thanks Oliver - terrific information here. With regards to that Radio Bremen screening of Beat Club No. 13 - I have a copy of this and it does not appear to be in the same condition as the re-mastered Beat Clubs on the 3 DVD Boxed sets, but as the image on the screen was shrunk so it does not fill the whole screen it is hard to tell - I think the Master copy would be in better quality than a VHS tape though.
Also, I would be intrigued to know what the 2 hosts at the start of the special are talking about - (unfortunately I am not fluent in German) - as from what I can gather they seem to be discussing the omission of Beat Club 13 from the Boxed Sets. This show has long intrigued me as besides showing the promotional clips for material such as Simon & Garfunkel, The Lovin' Spoonful, & Manfred Mann's "Just Like A Woman", there is also footage of the Walker Brothers live on "Ready Steady Go" doing 2 songs, including "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore".
I am puzzled as to where this discussion about the show being missing from the archive originates from - I also have had a poor quality time-coded copy of this same show for many years now, and I am sure the show, or parts of it, have been repeated during the 1990's Beat Club re-screenings - I have a good copy of the Manfred Mann clip and Lady Godiva from Peter & Gordon with the "N3" logo on the top left so I am not sure how it came about that the episode was missing from the RB archives at any time?
These 3 Beat Club Boxed sets are magnificent by the way - this is a perfect example of how a company can market and produce a quality product despite all of the inherent music clearance hassles that must have been experienced along the way - the fact they managed to license the performances of EVERY artist that ever appeared on the show - plus a whole host of film clips as well (bar The Beatles) - shows up the real lack of dedication and apathy the BBC possesses towards it's musical heritage still. Nothing has changed. And it is not just the BBC - companies in both the TV and music industry around the world care little for their musical past. The same argument can be applied to the USA and here in Australia also. Regards
Brett

Oliver Roemer Member Hi, maybe I can shed a little light in terms of the quality and picture format of these box-sets. Although I haven't got them, I can tell you that the quality of the picture and sound have been restored dramatically but carefully in superbe form as oposed to the scarcely shown repeats of some of the shows on german TV from the early 90's. As far as I know, all of these shows were videotaped, they were probably also part of the videocollection by Radio Bremen producer and Beat-Club developer Mike Leckebush, who had his own television production company & Studios "LAV" (Leckebusch Audio & Video) since 1984 in Osterholz-Scharmbeck near Bremen until his death, aged 62, in 2000. Although being his own Boss, he still still was working as a freelance producer for Radio Bremen Television throughout the 80's and 90's, including such productions as "Musikladen Eurotops" and "Das Rockarchiv" in which big parts of Beat-Club" and "Musikladen" were newly compiled. The picture format is as far as I know the original 4:3, unfortunately Radio Bremen - TV has shown the first three episodes in remastered form on "Vinyl" around christmastime last year, but due to the broadcasting standard on NDR/Radio Bremen TV and on Eins Festival they were shown in cropped 16:9 format as oposed to TOTP which they show in it's original 4:3 format, full screen, which I prefer. I think, this led to protest among viewers, because if "Vinyl" is now showing Beat-Club archive material it is broadcast on a smaler screen in 4:3 format to show the whole original picture information, but with barriers up and down and on the left and right hand side of the screen. If You want to see more pictures and Information on the box-sets, here is a special micro site of ARD-Video about the sets (sorry, only in german language!): http://www.beatclub-edition.de./ and you can watch every single show from the box-sets of Beat-Club (DRM protected) free on this video on demand site, although I don't know if this works outside of Germany (there are other music video titles to watch for free too, e.g. series 25 of Later... with Jools Holland): free.videoload.de/c/16/17/40/86/16174086.htmlRegards, Oliver.

timdisney Member I can confirm that these box sets are excellent and a joy to watch. I have all three and they are as mentioned earlier in the thread all on VT. It's amazing the difference it makes when watching something on VT as opposed to a film recording. It doesn't seem like it's anywhere near as long ago as episodes of Ready, Steady, Go! and TOTP. I bought mine from Amazon Germany. I purchased the three together and received them within 3-4 days. Remember that V.A.T will be added to the total. I think it cost me something like an extra 20 Euros in VAT when ordering all three. www.amazon.de/Story-Beat-Club-196....48383618&sr=8-1 I also enjoyed the features about the radio stations such SBF, BFBS and RNI. I'm also learning to speak German at the moment, so it's a great way to pick up some more vocabulary Here's a question for Koen or Oliver. Do you know if Radio Bremen's former studios at Osterholz have been demolished yet? Or if the the building is to stay but be used for something else? I see Uschi Nerke is presenting a radio show each Saturday on Bremen Eins. I should also add that if anyone is interested in buying these, don't get confused with the other Beat Club releases. Make sure you only buy the sets titled "The Story of Beat Club"

Hi Laurence,
It's also good to see some of the features around the music as it gives a better insight into what Beat Club was like as a whole programme. It's fun to see DLT speaking a bit of German, albeit off a crib sheet, but he got by. I didn't realise Beat Club was also seen in parts of Asia, South America, Africa and other parts of Europe. From what I can gather, it was setup to keep the younger German post WW2 generation happy as they were turning to BFBS and the pirates for their pop music fix and networks like ARD wanted to steer the audience back towards domestic broadcasters.
I didn't find the earlier episodes as interesting as the golden era between 66 and 69, but it gives an insight into how the programme developed from a local show into an international production replicating the style of RSG and American Bandstand. There is an interesting edition recorded on VT at The Marquee Club in London with Hendrix and The Who. They used outside broadcast facilities from Intertel. Strange to see a 1960s London street scene on VT

I'm looking forward to this release even more after reading your comments, Tim!
I agree with you that the '66 - '69 period was probably the strongest, being such a classic time for british pop / rock. From what i've seen of the very early shows, the acts were more obscure and it hadn't found a proper identity. Also, the colour era, although interesting, went a bit too far away from pop towards prog rock for my liking. An interesting document of their times though. So great that they all exist!

Here is the full list of Beatles clips shown on the various Beat Club episodes, all of which were excluded from the Boxed Set release - there were 17 different clips shown over the years (plus one from the Plastic Ono Band) - ALL were shown on the Vinyl Special.
Beat Club 5 – 12/02/66 - The Beatles – Ticket To Ride – Intertel Promo with group playing in front of enlargened train ticket. As this was the opening song, has the large Beat Club caption superimposed twice through the course of the clip. Beat Club 5 – The Beatles – We Can Work It Out – Intertel Promo Version 3 – Group in Beige Jackets Beat Club 5 – The Beatles – Day Tripper – Intertel Promo Version 3 – Group in cut-out railway carriage – only 1:35 of the clip is shown as it is the last clip on the show and cuts to a dancing German Audience – all other performances on this show were German bands performing live in the studio.
Beat Club 6 – 26/03/66 – The Beatles – I Feel Fine – Intertel Promo Version 1 – Ringo on the Exercise Bike Beat Club 6 – The Beatles – Help – Intertel Promo – The Group under umbrellas – this one has the Beat Club closing titles superimposed towards the end of the clip.
Beat Club 11 – 27/08/66 – The Beatles – Rain – Black & white Promo version 2 – videotaped in B & W for UK market Beat Club 11 – The Beatles – Paperback Writer Promo version 3 – as per Rain
Beat Club 17 – 25/02/67 - The Beatles – Penny Lane – standard outdoor promo clip (originally videotaped in colour)
Beat Club 19 – 22/04/67 – The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever – standard outdoor promo clip (as per Penny Lane)
Beat Club 26 – 25/11/.67 – The Beatles – Hello Goodbye – Promo Version 1 (The Group in Saville Theatre wearing the Sgt Pepper suits)
Beat Club 29 – 09/03/68 – The Beatles - Lady Madonna - Promo Version 1 (Group in Abbey Road Studios rehearsing Hey Bulldog amongst other things)
Beat Club 37 – 16/11/68 – The Beatles – Revolution – Promo Version 1 (Live on Stage at Twickenham Studios) Beat Club 37 – 16/11/68 – The Beatles – Hey Jude – Standard Promo ex Twickenham Studios with invited audience – length of 6:54 so all that is missing is the David Frost intro and a little bit off the end
Beat Club 42- 26/04/69 – The Beatles – Get Back – The Standard Promo featuring bits from the “Let It Be” sessions and the Apple Rooftop performance
Beat Club 45 – 02/08/69 – The Beatles – Ballad Of John & Yoko – The Standard Promo featuring “Let It Be” out-takes and the home movie footage of John & Yoko. Also – Beat Club 45 – Plastic Ono Band – Give Peace A Chance – The Standard Film Clip – all 4:49 seconds of it!!
Beat Club 49 – 29/11/69 - The Beatles – Something – Standard outdoor promo film - only B & W on this version as Beat Club did not transmit in colour until 1970.
Beat Club 53 – 28/03/70 – The Beatles – Let It Be – The Standard Colour Promo Take filmed at Apple Studios
So whilst the originals of all of this material have circulated amongst Beatles collectors for many years, the screening of these clips as part of Beat Club had not taken place at all prior to this "Vinyl" Special of Radio Bremen - and it is pleasing to note they showed all 18 of these clips in full during the special as part of "The Beatles Beat Club Top 40" which is how it was presented. The special also featured a whole host of artists covering Beatles songs from both Beat Club and the Musikladen eras. The only clip not complete was "Lady Madonna" as this was interrupted by the German hosts doing their own "sing along" two-thirds of the way through the clip - not that that was much to worry about!!.
As an added bonus the Vinyl Special also featured Beat Club segments from Show No. 38 which promoted the "Yellow Submarine" film, and Show No. 42 which featured film of John & Yoko during that infamous Amsterdam "bed in" of 1969. Also on Show 42 we see host Dave Lee Travis doing a Top 7 chart run-down which led to The Beatles at Number 1 with "Get Back". I am not certain if any of this material is included in the Beat Club DVD Boxed Sets or not - I have not double-checked.
I hope this solves the mystery of what Beatles performances were included on the original Beat Club shows. Great to see that although they could not be included on the DVD releases at least RB had the sense to show them as a separate special. A TV station that must actually care about their musical heritage!!
