I probably be offered 100s of episodes of minder on VHS!
Yep you can bet your pants on it. !. It was funny at first when i kept getting boxes of Vhs tapes of any old TV shows. But after a while It got to be a big pain in the arse, As I was sending tapes back at my own expense, I pretty much stopped mid 90's. Peoples Ideas on what is "old" may have changed now I hope, and someting unique will show up. I like your letter too, nice point about TOTPs, that should get a broader rage of people thinking about this. Rich you don't mind if i post this on my blog? I have lots of people who visit my blog who are Just the right kind of people who might have anything. In fact I have 2 leads right now, due to people visiting my site! does anyone have any photos of early "consumer" VTR's? If I can put Rich's Letter on my blog I'd like some images of the gear itself. and nothing triggers the memory better than a image!. I have photos of a few different brand Sony Style open reels. but i need some more.

Slightly off topic but another way to possibly find old video tapes is by joining your local "Freecycle" group on Yahoo, you can put "wants" requests on there,i am going to try it this week on a couple of groups that are local to me,i will let you know if i get any results.

good luck with freecycle. if anybody else wants to have a go then feel free to cut and paste my letter into any blogs, websites or email it to a newspaper yourself. it would be great if a few other people had a go. i used Top Of the Pops as an example as due to the shear number of shows that were broadcast and the fact that there are some missing from a time when home vcrs were becoming available i felt that there maybe a chance of some surviving. Also some of the shows may have been kept if people were in the audience or were particular fans of a group that appeared. anyway will keep you posted

The fact they've published the letter at all is very encouraging! Let's hope something comes of it.

I suppose the people at www.vtoldboys.com/ already know about missing episodes and why they should be returned? Some missing stuff may vey well be found on youtube. Some weeks ago I encouraged someone to send his 16mm colour footage from Wuthering Heights to the BBC.

Just to further update you. My letter was printed in the Bristol Evening Post yesterday, the editor also printed a large picture of Morecambe and Wise next to it which was nice touch. So far it hasn't yielded anything useful other than a call from a gentleman of 78 who offered me some stuff on VHS that wasn't missing. Nice to speak to him though. I am now moving onto a regional paper that covers a large part of the South West, the beauty of email means that once you have a standard letter its easy to just adapt it and forward it onto the next publication.........i do hope others will give this a try. just to keep you updated, my letters to newspaper editors have now been printed in 2 newspapers. so far this has bought offers of tv recording from 3 people however in each case they are recording that are not missing. i hope to get my letter published in a regional paper asap and will let you know when this happens. although nothing has turned up at least my experiment has proved that it is possible for an individual like my self to undertake their own hunt and that members of the public are willing to help.

my letter was published today in the Western Daily Press which is a regional paper that covers the south west of England. Hopefully with this sort of area coverage it will turn something up. I have already had one call today but was only offered the World at War on vhs!

A final update here. My 3 letters that were published in various newspapers resulted in 3 phone calls and 1 email offering tv programs. Unfortunately none of these were missing. Its a shame that nothing of interest has come to light, i will however try and get further letters published in some of my local papers but until i get a positive result this will be my last post on this link. cheers Rich
