I know this is an old thread, I hope I'm not breaking any rules by raising it. But I see the OP is still an active member and might be interested. The trouble at t'mill sequence from The Spanish Inquisition episode is a parody of a (then) popular and well known TV series Inheritance starring Michael Goodliffe, John Thaw and James Bolam. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inheritance_%28TV_series%29Good one, that sounds indeed very likely. I had a similar feeling about the Montgolfier brothers sketch, except that I never saw the 'original'.

I started to watch MPFC during the 1989-90 reruns, & didn't pick up on a lot a references at the time. Since then I've picked up a few things that when over my head.
One being It's Arthur Tree, which spoofs shows by both Simon Dee & David Frost.
