Derann films has this on it's current list.....!
1623 BOYD QC : Britain's answer to Perry Mason starring Michael Dennison as the Barrister who would stop at nothing in solving his case. Nostalgic T.V. show from the 1950's. Here is a lost episode entitled Inside Job. Excellent B/W print 800' (very rare) £89.99

I've read about several of these recently being found. Have any of them actually been returned to the archives or are they all in private hands?

Sadly, none of the collectors have yet to return the prints to the NFA, which holds what is left of the A-R archive. Kaleidoscope is very good friends with the ex-MD of A-R nowadays and he would love to see more of the product being returned, either to him, us or the NFA, but shows like 'Boyd QC' seem to have little status attached to them, so rarely get returned. A shame, because given the chance, Kaleidoscope would happily re-screen them. Chris Perry

This may be a dumb question -- but why doesn't somone here buy the print and lend it to the NFA (or let someone from A-R know to buy the print)? I'd do it myself, but it seems silly for me to get a print from the UK sent to the USA and then send it right back to the UK ....

It's possible someone already has - unfortunately Derann's primitive method of selling films means that you have to say yes you'll buy it in an email - only to receive an email back saying it's already sold - In this instance - they "Lost" all of their incoming email and by the time I got a repeat copy of my email to them it had sold. Whether the print has gone to someone interested in loaning it to the BFI or not remains to be seen.

When I saw the list I was surprised to find that is was listed as 'lost' - very odd - how did they know!!! Derann never used to prize old tv films, but now know how to charge for them. In response to Chris, I did give the BFI a loan of the least damaged of the two that I had and one of these was screened some years back. I thought it was very dry and it seemed to empty NFT2 towards the end!!!

Another Derann ep eh? They are only 2 miles up the road from me, and I've known Steve for years, but they never talk about what they buy or sell. I've tried to buy several things in the past, but they are always sold. Perhaps the mysterious Reg Varney, who beat Kaleidoscope to buying a Blackmail and Boyd QC episode may return them? Let's hope so. Chris

Chris, I've had these problems with Derann too. Everything is always sold and to be honest, I'm not even keep on giving them the business. If anyone else is keen - they should go for it! In the past, I've had some good prints from them, but also some terrible ones. I'm surprised they are so 'up front' about selling 'mint' 16mm prints of classic extracts and trailers. These appear regularly on the list so it is possible to assume they have many copies or are in fact printing these up. I wonder if their original contract is for Super 8mm only. Could be wrong, but mint 16mm prints are ideal material for DVD mastering - I wonder if the Hollywood studios know these are being manufactured.
On the subject of Reg Varney. He is a regular poster on this forum and has already handed back material to the BBC. I've no idea why he hides behind a pen-name - you'd have to ask him. All these cloaks seem unimportant and only add layers of mystery to an already murky atmosphere.

I have bought 8mm from Derann for many years. I think the second hand sales list are often out of date before they are posted due to callers at the shop. At one open day they had 50 or so Hawaii 50 prints in the shop (literally under a table, but in full view) these didn't appear on the lists until secveral months later and then 1 or 2 a list.

Recently there were people complaining about Super 8mm prints. A couple had 'invested' in a large number of Disney feature cartoons. No doubt these were immaculately produced prints - at £200-£300 each. Even though well cared for and reasonably new, some of these prints were fading. Now, if those prints had been made on Kodachrome, there wouldn't have been a problem. However, most prints are (and still will be made) on integrated colour coupler stock. £200-£300 could buy a large number of DVDs!

That's because these purchases are not made for 'him' but made on behalf of a number of enthusiasts, some of whom are also regulars to this forum. Thankfully they all have the very best of intentions, I wouldn't be involved if they didn't, but they would also like to see the programmes for themselves before they are returned to their rightful homes. Not unlike some other organisations that already exist. All these cloaks seem unimportant and only add layers of mystery to an already murky atmosphere. Wouldn't life be dull without a bit of mystery? I'm not sure what the 'murky' reference is supposed to infer, but bidders on ebay are entitled to a little privacy. And it would take a very foolish person to risk their own personal feedback on ebay when relying on the co-operation of a considerable number of other people. Thank you for respecting our privacy.

Then why all the mystery? My murky reference is just that people like to hide behind names on this site, instead of coming out and declaring who they are. Now, as for these films on e-bay. I'm not very keen on having to outbid people on e-bay in general, but if there is something I want to see then I place my highest bid and wait and see what transpires. One thing is certain, you won't see me hiding behind different names. By hiding behind a veil, you will push up the price of your purchases. A good example is that 'Blackmail' print which went up and up. Good news for the seller, but not much for anyone who wanted to bid. If there is a collection of people who are contributing towards purchases, why not explain this on this site in advance? Why all the secrecy?

Well, a very stimulating bit of tooing and froing. My father was actaully a Bus driver and taught many people to drive the Lodekka bus that Stan Butler actually acts as a driver on alias Reg Varney; I must hold a seance to ask if Reg Varney was a collector of old television prints. It is POSSIBLE that the Reg Varney who buys up old 16mm prints is actaully the Reg Varney who acts as Stan. However, be that as it may, if I knew the purchaser of the Boyd QC ep this week from Derrann I'd plague him with emails to get a copy, so that could be a reason for the 'secrecy' and 'murkiness' - I'd use the term 'privacy'. On the subject of Derrann and their sales, it doesn't really surprise me that the item was sold, perhaps they'd serve their clients better if they'd have a website that we all could access

So, presumably when your name is mentioned at MBW, you'll be known as Reg Varney or Harold Steptoe or whatever?!? For goodness sake, you've even met me! Why not just use your real name? You used it when you donated Morcambe and Wise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andy, I am astonished at your petty stupidity and naivety. That previous post was NOT from me, but thanks for having a spat and revealing my identity. Check with Mark B! He must be able to identify the culprit. In answer to your previous post if there is something I want to see then I place my highest bid and wait and see what transpiresWhich is exactly what we did. Re: See what transpires - Not exactly true. You have been known to bid in the last ten seconds too. I wouldn't normally have mentioned this, but now you've asked for it. And he does! By hiding behind a veil, you will push up the price of your purchasesHow? The bidding on the item will increase no matter what name is used. Good news for the seller, but not much for anyone who wanted to bid. It's an auction, the seller aims to achieve the highest price. You can't seriously tell me that you would happily sell an item on ebay to someone who offered less money than the highest bidder. If there is a collection of people who are contributing towards purchases, why not explain this on this site in advance? Now that really would push the price up.. So, presumably when your name is mentioned at MBW, you'll be known as Reg Varney or Harold Steptoe or whateverI seem to remember you mentioning on this very forum a while ago about people trying to claim some kind of dubious notoriety or fame from returns of missing material. Personally, I don't give a flying f*ck who's name is in the programme for MBW as long as the show is back at the NFTVA or the respective copyright holder's archive. It obviously matters to you though. Get a grip Andy. Do you really think I would behave in such a way as C l Ippie did? I am personally and deeply offended by your attitude. I don't need to resort to petty insults to prove some kind of sad point. You are a very accomplished missing-episodes hunter and I have a great deal of respect for your achievements, but you have just exposed yourself as a perpetrator of the kind of pathetic childish behaviour that taints the whole archival television scene. This comment had nothing to do with me and you have just shown your true colours to all. I'm sure you will continue to think that I am C l Ippie and no amount of evidence is going to convince you that you haven't made an unfortunate faux pas, but remember that every insult you throw my way will be thrown at quite a few forum contributors too. Let's stop this bl-oody 'club' mentality and get on with the job in hand. I don't want to fall out Andy, but THINK before you post.
