Somone will correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't it true that Shibaden didn't come into use until the 70s -- in which case if there's really Dr. Who on that tape, it would be Pertwee or Tom Baker -- in B&W... Lovely...

I have checked up on this on various sites. There is a lot of conflicting information out there about when the Shibaden came out - varying between '64 -'68.
I think it must have been on the market by '68.
I would not rule out the possibility that there could be missing Dr Who on that reel.

The company was around earlier, but my understanding always was that the VTRs didn't show up until 1970 ish... e.g. the VTR SV700E model

The earliest 405 line domestic VT machine to sell was the CV2000B (B for 405), launched in 1966. So 1965 and earlier is a hopless cause for home VT recordings.

Brian,
To answer your question, I was waiting for the auction to end, and the tape is received. Then I will send all 3 reel to reel tapes I have in for viewing. As that is what is needed to ascertain the program content.
It has been proved by the discovery of Space Pirates two on a CV2000 video reel that it is possible for old vintage Doctor Who to exist on reel to reel video. Also to be noted that along with the CV Space Pirates episode there was a reel of video for the missing moon-landing footage. However the video signal was far too degraded to recover. The audio was able to be recorded, and later released by the BBC on CD.

Auction Ended,
I was outbid by another bidder at 110 GBP. I am hoping that the high bidder is the RT Team.

Lance, I was watching the auction routing for you, and was gutted when you were outbid.
But the person who outbid you, Skaro1963, sounds familiar. Wasn't that the person who was backed to bid on 'Wall of Lies' when it appeared on ebay. Everyone else was asked not to bid against them ? Is that where I recognise the username from ?

That is correct. Skaro1963 was indeed the person from the RT who was brought in to bid on "Wall of Lies" during that big hoax several months back. Looks like this one is going to the RT then. All is well. Fingers crossed.

I am VERY pleased to hear that my memory still works. I am also pleased to hear this is going to the RT.
I am however, a bit disappointed that those who ask others not to bid, in turn did not respect the humble request of LanceM, and outbid him. Even though his good character and track record should be enough for them to know they were going to get it.
I hope they announce soon the contents of it soon. Let's hope its something missing......

All is well. Fingers crossed. Skaro1963 is *not* a member of the RT, but he's a well-known collector who has helped the team in the past. For instance, he supplied the Give-a-Show projector slides at very short notice for use on The Web Planet DVD. Richard

This sort of outbidding has been going on for years. It exists in other collector circles too, where collectors take a few different names so their "friends" cannot tell if they have outbid each other. Money does talk. But equally a fool and his money are easily parted... It can go either way. However, it would be foolish to pay 110 pounds for a tape with one episode of "The Tomorrow People" and a b/w copy of a Pertwee Doctor Who.

I will soon be sending my two reels to my friend who can view the contents. There is the already mentioned Goon interview reel, and there is a vintage 60's looking Shibaden reel marked Filey Tape. Heres hoping all these reels have some rare stuff. That makes 5 promising reels of videotape ( Goon Tape, Filey Tape, Eartha Kitt Frost Tape, Pete and Dud Tape, and lastly Dr Who Tape).
Thank you all again for your continued support in my efforts. I still intend to find more material out there, and am following some very concrete and promising leads right now. More to follow at a later date. Thanks again for the support, and fingers crossed !
Lance.

If the "People" reference beside "Dr Who" on the label is referring to "The Tomorrow People" as has been suggested, that would pretty much rule out a missing episode as TP started in 1973.

Who knows right now, everything is theory. Once the actual reel has been viewed and reported on, then it will become fact. I await that point.
