I recall someone; think it was Graham Howard; posted to say he had checked and TVNZ had no ACE OF WANDS. There remains three possibilities to me. Most unlikely is the scenario someone recorded off air on one of the formats then available; something from series 2; say in 1971. It's more likely for that than the first series. The second is that the same thing happened as with some DR WHO prints. That when the overseas company junked their prints; oddments found their way into private hands. If the B+W prints of SEVEN SERPENTS as has been stated; were still on offer (not just an error on an obsolete list); in the early 80s. Then maybe the prints got into private hands rather than being junked; which seems unlikely at that late date. I still can't believe with the impact it's known to have on its own team at the time; no one didn't try and get something as a souvenir from that story; such as a print or off air of the last episode. We might not know of it because of the lack of the same urgency as the DR WHO search; the owner may be regional (i.e. in Scotland); or not a high profile member of the production team. Indeed! Checking an archive conclusively is a difficult business though! Bits and pieces can be misfiled or turn up in bizzare places, as has happened even at the BBC, wasnt there something about a suspended ceiling having a bunch of 16mm top of the pops recordings hidden above it, or is that a myth? I seem to remember seeing that on a documentary! An off air recording somewhere is a possibility, equipment was getting slightly more common by the 70s. As much of a fan as I am of Dr who, it is a pity people are so single minded about missing TV really. There is a lot more to our missing TV heritage than just dr who. I suppose awareness is rising though. Still I expect if all the missing quatermass came back the average dr who forum wouldnt notice the ceiling thing is true apparently a bbc tech salvaged recordings but ran out of other hiding places

Yep, I remember seeing a documentary, and I think I recall him saying that he couldnt bear to see all the performances erased forever or something to that effect.

'TOMB OF THE CYBERMEN' after 15 years returning complete and the 'destroyed by contract' telerecording of ITVs TURN OF THE SCREW (1960) being two examples. It may well eventually come to light that a sideline member of staff like a studio hand; who recognised 'Seven serpents' worth borrowed it. Or clips on a domestic recording might appear. Don't forget the SWEET clips form LIFT OFF and CRACKERJACK that appeared on YOUTUBE. These were not in official archives and appear to be home recordings. Out of interest, what year where the sweet home recordings from? I am extremely interested in early home recordings. 73 and 74. The CRACKERJACK was said to be such; of TEENAGE RAMPAGE; colour but with no visible intros. Posted on the net. Andrew Martin verified this edition isn't held by the BBC. The format looks like a domestic recording possibly Philips; in colour. LIFT OFF includes Aysheas intros and is the song SIX TEENS from 74. This is a B+W recording which loses its time base often; something cahracteristic of the earlier PHILIPS video machines. This is not held by Granada but was also posted on the net.

As a slight off topic question john, do you know how widely adam adamant was sold abroad? Did that by any chance make it as far afield as australia and africa? Do records survive of sales? Sorry I don't know on this one! Andrew Martin might; if he reads this! All I know was that like OUT OF THE UNKNOWN a number of the episodes were actually made and transmitted as 35mm telerecordings. A 'slash' 35mm set of 'rushes' minus titles and music exists for the first episode of ADAM ADAMANT. Oddly the sole surviving entry for some time to series 2 'BLACK ECHO' was tx'd from VT; but a 16mm TR survived.

There are apparently audios for oddments from series 2; so it wouldn't be unreasonable to hope for maybe some super 8 format excerpts as happened with 'DR WHO'. I don't recall the highly rated EYE OF RA or JOKER 'Ace' stories so can only comment that my top 2 choices to return would be SERPENTS and NIGHTMARE GAS; which were to my mind the most powerful chillers from the early batch.

I'm sure if you wait a few months it will turn up at a cheaper price. I just picked up Adam Adamant for £20 in Smiths.
