As a massive fan of the musician Nick Drake, i was sadden to hear that his only known BBC session was missing. Well recently an imcomplete tape had ben found. The quality was good but was missing a few songs. An MP3 of the seesion has now been ding the rounds which is great.
so i was wondering if it would be possible to add a new section to the missing list about John Peel Sessions that are incomplete or missing.
im happy to write up a list of Missing sessions if everybody would like that

im happy to write up a list of Missing sessions if everybody would like that That would be a VERY long list. It all depends what you consider to be Peel sessions; do you include 'Top Gear' in that?.

I didn't know about the Nick Drake session, what songs were found, and what's still missing ? Pity it wasn't (presumably) found in time for the recent "Family tree" album.

They found the peel tape for nick about a year ago. it was decided not to use it on family tree because it would suit the style of the album.
for Peel sessions i thought it would be best not to include Top Gear. Im sure there couldnt be that many missing Peel Sessions? about 30? i would be more than happy to create and document a list for this site. Who is the person in charge of the list of missing episodes?

I didn't know about the Nick Drake session, what songs were found The last 57 seconds of "Time Of No Reply" with a short bit of Peel talking at the end, and "Three Hours" lasting 3 minutes exactly which seems to be incomplete at the start and the end. Apparently the first and 3rd songs of the session.

Ok everyone. im going to post the Peel sessions from 67 . Also, in the case of the Floyd, the sessions seems to consist of two separate parts- the "Set the Controls/Reaction in G" clip often attributed to another source, I have heard, actually comes from the same Top Gear session as the session with The Gnome, The Scarecrow, etc. Anyway, tracks by Tomorrow and Traffic, as well as Pink Floyd, were played on John Peel's first Top Gear broadcast, October 1st, 1967, of which a recording survives. In addition, the official Tomorrow CD "The 50 Minute Technicolor Dream" includes the tracks "Three Jolly Little Dwarfs" and "Revolution" from a Top Gear recording, dated by Wikipedia as the September 21, 1967 recording. As for the Tyrannosaurus Rex recording, a quick look at db.etree.org (a database, albeit often incomplete and incorrect, for unreleased recordings) lists this show: db.etree.org/lookup_show.php?shows_key=259423So presumably that session exists as well. I don't have a copy of "In Session Tonight" so I don't know whether the recordings above are complete or not, but they seem to be. This might (or might not) be a good idea, but if you want it to be accurate, you're going to have to put a lot more legwork into it than just listing sessions and saying "Unknown" when that information is trivial to find.

I don't know why the BBC don't release the T.Rex 'In Concert' from 1970 (could easily pad it out with session tracks and call it 'T.Rex at the BBC'??). When I worked at the Transcription Service we had a master tape (in stunning quality I hasten to add) of it, brilliant stuff : Debora/Jewel/Ride A White Swan/Elemental Child. Recorded as 3-piece, not a drummer in sight!!

The BBC 'T.Rex In Concert' was released quite a few years ago on CD; I remember seeing it in Our Price in the early nineties, presumably long deleted.

No, that's a Tyranosaurus Rex recording I think, the one I'm thinking of is later in the year, being a T.Rex line-up/name.

The writer Iain Sinclair discusses the actual show with Nick Drake at the end of the Preface (p12) to his anthology 'London: City Of Disappearances' (Hamish Hamilton, 2006). It would appear that not only was Sinclair on the same radio show, but that he held a tape recording of it (now lost - he dwells on this as part of the theme of 'disappearances'), and shot some 8mm footage too (though not, he stresses, of either Peel or Drake).
Oh well...

Hi Joe, re the Tomorrow session from 67 on Top Gear, 'Real Life Permanent Dream' and 'Colonel Brown' were released on the 'Shapes And Sounds - Orange And Red Beams from the BBC archives 1967 - 69' compilation CD / LP last year. Info can be found here...... topsoundsrecords.co.uk/Tapes also exist of 'Shy Boy' and 'My White Bicycle' (the latter missing a small portion I believe) but I haven't heard them and can't for the moment get at them! Cheers Nigel
