Does anybody know whether the radio version of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads still exists? There were 13 episodes made between 30 July & 22 October 1975. If so, has anybody got any recordings? cheers Rich

BBC7 featured 1 episode in Barry Cryer's Comedy Great's on the 1970's. I think it was on 14 June. The episode was 11/ Countdown.
Some of the others are in circulation as poor quality mp3s.

I can find the episode COUNT DOWN (ep 11) in the BBC archive listings but no others. Of course, this does not cover the transcription holdings. I am sure that all exist in private hands.

Are you refering to the original series "The Likely Lads" these were adapted for radio & broadcast 1964-65, as fart as I know the BBC has only 5 of these left, the recordings of "Whatever happened, etc" are from the tv series & were not made for radio. I believe the actors are still not on speaking terms after falling out years ago..

It is listed as the 8th October 75, and as Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads. There is an edition of the original also listed from 3rd September 1967 called Baby It's Cold Outside, but nothing else. This would not account for anything returned in the treasure hunt or TS.

All of the original 60s radio adaptions exist in private hands at least. WHTTLL seems rarer though, not sure how many episodes exist privately but I would have thought they are all out there somewhere as poor off-air recordings.

There was definately a radio series of 13 episodes that ran from 1/8/75 on Radio 4. The 13 episodes correspond exactly with those of the first TV series of WHTTLL, however it is definately a radio adaption & not simply the soundtrack from the TV version.
As far as what exists I can confirm that at least episodes 1-3 & 5-7 are in circulation in reasonably good condition. (of course what the BBC have in their archivies is probably another story).

Whoops!
The series did in fact originally run from 30/7/75. The date above is for the repeats.

The thirteen episodes of the first tv series of "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads" were adapted for radio, and ran on Radio 4 for 13 weeks in 1975, starting on 30th July, with a repeat in the same week.
The radio versions were adapted by Patrick Tilley from the television scripts, and he made changes wherever it was necessary in order to bridge a gap arising from the visual nature of television. But it seemed to me he also changed lines if he didn't like the tv dialogue, since lines were changed even in places where the original tv ones would have worked on radio.
So yes, the radio series was definitely an adaptation, and was not just broadcasting of the soundtrack from the tv series.
In point of actual fact, Patrick Tilley adapted only the first 8 scripts. John Browell adapted the final five. But I'm only familiar with the Patrick Tilley episodes. IMHO, they were not as good as the tv productions, probably because there was no time allowed to rehearse in radio. They essentially were just reading the scripts "cold". But they had a week of rehearsal for the tv episodes, and so could get much more out of the material - much more of a performance.
I have an excellent off-air recording of "5. I'll Never Forget Whatshername" from the radio, and it isn't a patch on the tv original. And I can say that even though I didn't see the tv episode until years later, and had become quite fond of the radio version by then. The radio production is quite "flat" by comparison.
I really don't think we're losing very much by sticking to the original rehearsed tv performances, and the original Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais tv scripts.

I have decent off-air recordings of programmes 9, 10, 11 and 13, if anyone is interested?

The Likely Lads and Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads were never issued by the Transcription Service.
