I posted this on Mausoleum too in case someone can help answer these questions on the series. If Andrew Martin is reading this, perhaps you can help?
The Kal guide listing for Once More With Felix is incomplete but can you say what exactly survives? There's the first edition and an incomplete second edition listed but there are some clips as well. Does the Leonard Cohen edition survive complete (two separate clips have been used on TOTP2, Sounds Of The '60s and Jools Holland) or are these the only bits? If so, do you know why and where they came from? Are there clips from other editions too?
One other point: how incomplete is the second edition? Is it just missing a small piece and how did this happen? I was just browsing the Cohen clips recently and it reminded me that these are things i've always wanted to ask about the series. Any answers you can give will be helpful.

Existing material for "Once More With Felix":
9/12/67 - colour VT - incomplete programme (Manfred Mann, Roy Kinnear) 16/12/67 - colour VT - incomplete programme (Spike Milligan, Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick, Pedro Soler) 20/1/68 - 16mm b/w film recording (recovered from Belgium recently) 27/1/68 - colour VT - incomplete programme (Leonard Cohen edition...) 17/2/68 - 16mm b/w film recording (incomplete) (recovered from Belgium) 9/3/68 - 16mm b/w film recording (excerpt) (ex Belgium) 16/3/68 - 16mm b/w film recording (excerpt) (ex Belgium) 23/3/68 - colour VT - incomplete programme (Patrick Wymark, Bill le Sage, Incredible String Band) 18/1/69 - colour VT (Julian Bream, John Cameron, Tom Paxton)
There are also 4 editions of "Julie Felix" from 1970: 12/4/70 - colour VT (incomplete programme) (Four Tops, Alan Price) 26/4/70 - colour VT (poor quality master tape) (Hollies, Jimmy Page) 3/5/70 - colour VT (incomplete programme) (Marmalade, Lou Rawls) 24/5/70 - colour VT (incomplete programme) (Paco Pena, Fleetwood Mac)
*I can't guarantee, with most of these being incomplete, that any particular guest act exists...!
There are also two editions of "Tonight in Person" with JF (29/11/65 & 6/3/66), a so-far unidentified soundtrack of another of her programmes (my fault for not getting around to listening to it), and various appearances on "The Frost Report", "Late Night Line-up", "Val Doonican Show", "Degrees of Folk", "The Young Generation"...

Many thanks for the detailed listing, Andrew. The Felix archive is looking a lot more healthy now. Didn't know about any of the recoveries though; hopefully some can be used at a future MBW!
Just one thing: how incomplete are the incomplete shows? Have they always been around in that way or are they recent recoveries from somewhere? And what's the quality of the poor quality master? Is it a 2" and useable after restoration? Thanks in advance. I went to see Julie a while ago and it renewed my curiosity about her series (I asked her about the series and she seemed to think the Cohen material was recovered from Canada, although I was dountful of this as it's in PAL and not NTSC).

The colour VT incomplete editions I think are part of Bob Pratt's collection, I can't see why or how else these bits would have survived - as such though they're not very recently recovered. I'm not sure exactly what exists insofar as our cataloguing seems to have been done by someone who assumed these were complete programmes. The Leonard Cohen edition isn't even logged properly, like a lot of these things it's hiding among some engineering tapes... A bit of a mess really, and why do I have a terrible feeling I'm going to have to sort them out? The b/w film recording fragments are a complete unknown, they only came back in the last year or so, I don't think anyone's looked at them properly.

Julie was also featured on the The David Frost show 2 February 1967 with Carol lyndley
transmitted in the US as well as 'night out in London'
presumbly a Rediffusion production rather than Beeb?

Presumably this is The Frost Report (BBC, the topical / sketch show), as Julie featured in this series. The Frost Programme was a magazine / interview format (Rediffusion) running at the same time, although I don't think she appeared regularly on this (if she did appear at all).

I'm interested in a listing of the acts that appeared matching the unlisted dates given by Andrew Martin for the returned 'Once more with Felix'?
I read ('Record Collector') that folk artist Bert Jansch appeared on an edition but this had been wiped. Of course chances are the performance may be on one of those returned clips.
Does anyone have a full listing for the guests? Thanks.

I'd be interested in a full listing too. The Kal list is not complete as regards acts. This series deserves some kind of status, being the first music show in colour on UK TV (pre-dating Colour Me Pop). I hope Andrew Martin gets those tapes logged and properly archived soon (hint hint)!!

I think you'll find that some of the recordings labelled "incomplete" should be called "unedited", i.e. they are studio recordings, nothing missing but with separate sections.

Quite possibly, but I think there are no *complete* studio recording spools if so. Once I get a chance to do a full stock-check, as it were, I'll post a list (there I go making rash promises again).

I checked this website just now and it's a bit vague. The most up to date listing for this series is from Andrew Martin though, as he posted here recently: Existing material for "Once More With Felix": 9/12/67 - colour VT - incomplete programme (Manfred Mann, Roy Kinnear) 16/12/67 - colour VT - incomplete programme (Spike Milligan, Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick, Pedro Soler) 20/1/68 - 16mm b/w film recording (recovered from Belgium recently) 27/1/68 - colour VT - incomplete programme (Leonard Cohen edition...) 17/2/68 - 16mm b/w film recording (incomplete) (recovered from Belgium) 9/3/68 - 16mm b/w film recording (excerpt) (ex Belgium) 16/3/68 - 16mm b/w film recording (excerpt) (ex Belgium) 23/3/68 - colour VT - incomplete programme (Patrick Wymark, Bill le Sage, Incredible String Band) 18/1/69 - colour VT (Julian Bream, John Cameron, Tom Paxton) There are also 4 editions of "Julie Felix" from 1970: 12/4/70 - colour VT (incomplete programme) (Four Tops, Alan Price) 26/4/70 - colour VT (poor quality master tape) (Hollies, Jimmy Page) 3/5/70 - colour VT (incomplete programme) (Marmalade, Lou Rawls) 24/5/70 - colour VT (incomplete programme) (Paco Pena, Fleetwood Mac) *I can't guarantee, with most of these being incomplete, that any particular guest act exists...! ...oh, I do hope that the incomplete 9/12/67 edition does indeed still feature Manfred Mann!

I checked this website just now and it's a bit vague. Vague? It lists all the acts, I thought that's what you wanted. As for the actual archive status there's probably only one person that can tell us... I'm pretty sure Manfred Mann's performance is intact. Re:studio recordings - I'd be surprised if the ones that start with the opening titles and end with the end titles (I'm mainly talking about the later shows here) don't contain the relevant pieces of the show in between. Of course, should logic be applied when dealing with the archives? Probably not.
