These 3 shows are the only surviving one's unfortunetly they have been around a while .I suppose we must be greatful for these but those that have been wiped or lost is absolutely devastating. I often wonder what brian matthews thinks about it all he has the best show on radio by a long way radio 2s sounds of the sixties saturday mornings 8am till 10am its brilliant.

At last December's Missing Believed Wiped I'm sure Dick Fiddy mentioned a recent Thank Your Lucky Stars recovery which the BFI had hoped to show but it wasn't ready in time. Any idea what this is?

Yes, that was it. Just a clip, i'm afraid, but still a welcome addition.

Am i right in thinking that ABC didn't wipe there archive and that it just got trashed when they lost there franchise? If thats the case then the possibilities of more material turning up is likely.

I've heard that The Merseybeat Special turned up in Australia a few years back so there is hope...

No definitive answer to this one.
Dave Hamilton produced a tape at Kal that he was given in Manchester in 68 of the retrospective he presented.
It had been used several times, the last time for an episode of the Rag Trade I think. Shows that even then tapes were reused frequently. Plus remember a lot of stuff went oiut live and was not taped.
The clips in the show were largely ones we are still familiar with, suggesting that even back in 68 a lot had already gone.
I imagine if tapes were at Teddington they would have been ok. Verity Lambert cleared a lot out in the 70's I believe. But I suppose in 68 any remaining tapes in Manchester and Birmingham might have been junked, like we all do in a house clearout.
Anyone else know any other info?

PS Orange junked my websites!
They wanted cash so I let them lapse.
Hopefully one day I'll set up a more permanent TYLS website.

But I suppose in 68 any remaining tapes in Manchester and Birmingham might have been junked, like we all do in a house clearout. Actually, the ABC VT library was kept till around '77 or '78. The owners at that point decided they didn't want to keep the videos any more and were given to Thames to re-cycle. So, tragically, a lot of stuff went at this point (e.g. much of early Public Eye etc.) even though it had survived nearly ten years after loss of franchise! No idea how much of their output remained at this point as I expect some tapes had already been recycled during the life of ABC. There were quite a few VTs that went at this point though, I believe. The ABC stuff which DOES survive now is all of the telerecorded variety (which was kept separately), barring the odd VT that the BFI have kept from the '60s. I believe that Kal uncovered the paperwork to prove this happened so maybe Chris Perry can elaborate further? These are the basic facts though. Makes you sick, doesn't it?! One the plus side, occasional ABC things do seem to surface from time to time (such as the Merseyside TYLS edition, the master VT of which was found in Australia a few years ago!) So there is always hope for a few things...

Thanks for the great info, Laurence!
The masochist would love to know what shows were wiped then.
And just before the video renting age really kicked in!
