I'm sure the b & w Aretha Franklin performance is from one of the existing 1969 - 74 BBC Cliff shows. One is a T/R circa 1969 'Cliff Richard show'. This show is basically 'Its Cliff' for which the start theme song & title only were changed, using the same Beach buggy titles. 1 edition of 'Its Cliff' either Jan or April 1970 is held on colour VT. Following this the next edition is a Dec. 1972 special edition on film & location featuring olivia newton John. After records have stated 1973 series on survives. The first series to feature olivia (1971) & the 1972 series with New seekers singing eurovision candidates are missing. I've seen what looks like colour inserts of comedy sketches set to Cliff songs on film which may be additional surviving material (69 - 71) to the complete shows.

If the 69 shows were pre Nov 69 on BBC1 it wouldv'e been transmitted from a B & W VT. I'm not sure if the show I mentioned is from 1970 as I believe the series overlapped 1969 into 70. Theres a possibility the film T/R is from a show originally in colour.
One colour master exists either from Feb or April 70 to my knowledge. This is the 'Its Cliff' format. Then there seems to be a jump missing the regular Olivia Newton John guest 1971 period & New Seekers Eurovision preview 72 I recall. Then a special (Dec?) 72 made on film stock. O. Newton John reappears in the Sep 73 onward series which I think survives all colour VT. There are the 1974 shows but again some of these only exist as B & W TRs.
Despite the 71 series being missing, after learning this I saw a TV retrospect show a film insert of a comedy sketch (wedding) dated to that period, so possibly the film inserts survive? I know I made a point of taping & keeping any 'its cliff' material thats been repeated in recent years. I'll have to dig it out!
P.S. did you know Mike Reid (DJ), who is a Cliff fan is supposed to have a collection of pop clips, probably TV as well...

I think many DJs have clips and shows, but don't want to share, a number also had videos in the late 60'/early 70s and there could be some good stuff there.

i hope i can clarify a few points re Cliff's catalogue of work for the BBC. Not a pretty picture to paint i must add...
His first series of 13 "Its Cliff Richard" shows (in colour) ran from early Jan to late March 1970. Only one show.... no 5 from 31st Jan survives in the BBC archives.
A new13 show series was also produced in 1971 and again in 1972 (Jan-March) and nothing whatsoever survives from these. So of the 39 shows produced during 1970-2 only one show survives. I have clear audio recordings of all these shows which is scant consolation i suppose.
Cliff returned to the BBC in August/Sept 1974 to make a final 6 part series of "its Cliff Richard" . All 6 are held at the BBC.
The comedy sketches alluded to in previous posts and Cliff in boat with Olivia etc come from the 2 August Bank Holiday Specials from 1970 and 1971 which have survived. The 1970 show (made in colour but only available as a b/w telerecording) featured Arethra Franklyn as the main guest. A couple of joint Anglo/ Scandinavian Cliff shows from the early 70s survive... the BBC probably restoring their copies from the Swedish archives. These shows are Cliff in Skansen (open air concert 1970), Cliff in Scandinavia (oct 1970) and Cliff in Berlin (March 1971).
I would dearly love to see more of the "Its Cliff Richard" series. Cliff certainly doesnt have any. Cliff's agent told me the series didnt travel abroad so the chances of their survival look slim Having said that i do have in my possession a very poor quality video recording of 9 minutes of show 12 from the 1970 season. Source unknown. Some members on here may mock Cliff but he did make great television for family audiences at that time. Anyone know the whereabouts of these shows i would be most interested to know.

In case anyone's interested, I remember seeing an Cliff Richard appearance at a Billy Graham Crusade that was repeated on tv in the past year or so. I believe he has appeared at several of these, so they may survive also.

In case anyone missed it I've copied a recent post over from the General forum that is relevant to this thread - posted in reply to my asking what existed of THE BILLY COTTON BAND SHOW:
Larry Dutch Guest Re: Show of the Week - The Cotton Club - 27/10/68 « Reply #8 on: Mar 23rd, 2005, 06:16am » ------------------------------------------------------------------------ on Mar 21st, 2005, 11:55am, Guest-Andrew wrote: On the same subject - what exists of the Billy Cotton Band Show? I've got the 50th show special from '59 with Max Bygraves, the christmas eve 1961 show with Eric Sykes and Hattie Jacques and the one BBC4 screened last year from '64 with Spike Milligan. I've heard mention of a 1956 edition being extant but can anyone confirm?
There's an 8 (?) minute 16mm telerecorded excerpt which survives from an ep in 1964 (?) of Cliff Richard and The Shadows performing 'Do You Wanna Dance' plus a vaudeville type number with Cliff and Billy Cotton. It's all performed live. Might have the precise TX date written somewhere. Cheers
Andrew: if anyone has copies of these excerpts I'd love to see them.

Ive answered all these questions re the "Its Cliff Richard" just last week on the other thread about Cliff Richard. Please read. The Cliff and Hank at airport sketch is from the one off Cliff in Scandinavia tv show from Dec 1970 ... a joint BBC/Scandinavian production which does survive at the BBC. Re. Aretha Franklyn. This is answered on the other thread.
