I am trying to find several lost and forgotten programs for historical and educational purposes, with fairground related content, that were broadcast on TV from the late 1970s and early 1980s. One of these was titled 'Making A Bob Or Two, about the Collins and Mulhearn showmen from North West England, which I beleive was a documentary produced for either the Arena or Horizon series by the BBC. The other is a Stop Look and Listen schools program episode made by ATV and narrated by Chris Tarrant in the late 1970s. The exact title I am unsure of, but it was a look at a travelling fairground operated by the Bates family in Leicester. If any one can recall these films, provide any further details on the title or producer, or can provide help on locating an archive with them in please contact me.

Hi, the Stop Look Listen film you are looking for must be the one called "Fairground".
It was first shown in autumn 1975 (6/11/75) in the very first batch of Chris Tarrant-narrated episodes, and it was last shown at the very end of the summer term 1985 in batch "A" (26/6/85 would have been the last broadcast).
The episode might have been remade during that time, possibly in 1978-9 when it moved from the autumn to the summer term, I'm not sure? The TV Times description from 1979 onwards said it was about "the activity involved in setting up a fair". Do you know anything more about the content? I am working at length on writing about Stop Look Listen for my website about schools broadcasting, and any more details would be very welcome.
Anyway, don't know if that helps you track it down at all. It's one of the few episodes shown in the 80s that I've not got, sorry.

The Richard Mulhearn edition of 'Making A Bob Or Two' (it was part of a series of the same name) aired on 10/04/79 - it appears to still exist, too.
