A bit off target, but TPTV showed the 1963 episode 'Before the Ball' last night which ended on a cliffhanger (Andy shot) and then I discovered part two, 'The End of the Trail' doesn't exist! Could any Dixon aficionados tell me how it ended, please?! Many thanks.
(I'm aware Andy survived.)

Good question, Rob. I'm guessing that Andy doesn't hallucinate that he's in 2024!

Does anyone know why so little survives? Was it not sold overseas? Thanks Graham Yes, it would've helped if it had been picked uo overseas, but I believe it never was. The first 13 episodes from Series 16 were acquired by NZBC / New Zealand in late 1970, but only 11 of them went to air over 1971 to 1972 (although the prints were held, Obsession and Notify if Found were not screened). Eps 1,2 and 13 were also repeated. The two unaired eps were destroyed in 1971, Copper's Luck was sent to Australia in 1972, while all the others were destroyed in 1974.

I always think that the loss of all those Dixon episodes is desperately sad as it represents a great example BBC family TV during a time that I, and I suspect a lot of others on here were growing up. Not to mention all the effort, time and money that went in to making them of course. It was also always there during a period of major social change and provided a reassuring anchor for many older people during that time.

Yes,now only another 399 missing episodes to find, but as they were transmitted in 1954 probably live as well then junked afterwards, bit of a long shot typical bbc.

Always remembering that thousands of shows that were transmitted live, here and in the US survive as kinescopes/telerecordings.
"An early television recording made by filming the picture from a monitor screen; a kinescope."

"An early television recording made by filming the picture from a monitor screen; a kinescope." Wiktionary Yes off topic but even The Twilight Zone went onto VT/kinescope for maybe a season?. Rod Serling (always battling the networks) was not happy about this cost-cutting arrangement and normal service was resumed. Be interesting if these have survived as some had said it brought a unique mood to the stories involved but for the majority, it was a definite no-no. Apparently, they utilized the first gen color cameras in B/W to maybe try and recover some money on the cameras which had proved fickle and unstable in color. .

Including the classic Christmas episode Night of the Meek. The limitations really hurt the episodes. All were recorded on vt and all retained as original vt. All released on official season sets and broadcast since.

I presume early colour video tape was expensive & often reused if the contents weren't considered essential to preserve.
