"episode 2 was recovered by a fan and returned to the BBC in late 1978"
As Steve Roberts has said, that episode was actually stolen from the ABC, forcing the BBC to send a replacement (before 1975 obviously).

"It's such a shame that Nigeria didn't get the New Zealand censor clips." Why would they even ASK or the censor clips?! That's not how things work... You’d have thought that a TV station “down chain” of a station that had edited a programme would want the edited bits put back in so they could make their own editing decisions, but hey, clearly not.

The Nigerian station probably didn't even know (or care?!) that the prints were cut. While there were obviously splices where the joins were, the station technicians may have just attributed those to general film damage / breakage repairs. But it was policy for TVNZ to re-insert cut footage before films were sent on, but clearly that didn't always happen.

I understand NZ censors were pretty reactionary to *anything*, not just Doctor Who. Reactionary is being *kind*.
