Black On Black was co-hosted by Pauline Black of The Selecter. I recall Toots and The Maytals guesting on the show circa 1985. I loved all the 2-Tone ska artists, plus Toots, plus Buster Bloodvessel and Bad Manners! Now I'm really wishing for a Black On Black DVD set (and while were at it the 'Dance Craze' film finally on DVD too). It looks like Channel 4 and BBC2 stayed fairly steady at around 10% of viewers for many year, but the first two years of Channel 4 people were still adjusting sets to get it I think. Those early more 'commercial' hit series and U.S. football were necessary to help get people interested in going to that bother I suppose, so that's pretty smart that they did have an eye towards that! I can't quite remember but I think some of the smaller transmitters didn't have Channel 4 to begin with. The ITV companies promoted Channel 4 in their continuity. Of course some of them were making programmes for Four, such as The Tube from Tyne Tees. Retuning wasn't a big deal in those days as most TVs had dials under a flap or push buttons on the from which could be tuned by turning them. Probably more easy that the later electronic tuning?

In the early days, C4 used to have "Local AVs" where we promoted what was on ITV over a slide or played an ITV promo - and they did the same for us.
By the way "Black on Black" was made by LWT so they should all still exist in the ITV archive - Trevor Phillips was a Producer & presenter and Beverly Anderson also presented. Same applies to "Eastern Eye", also LWT, produced by Samir Shar.

I do remember her doing some impressive dancing to Toots and The Maytels (I don't think they usually had musical guests, and that this was a special occasion - the final episode perhaps?). Unlike 'Eastern Eye', I more often than not watched 'Black on Black', perhaps because I lived in an area (Peckham, South London) which had a large Caribbean population and I also had a black Antiguan stepdad.

"Black on Black" had quite a bit of music & pop culture, never mind interviews with people like Eartha Kitt, Don Letts, Reggae artists awards, tribute to Marvin Gaye etc. But music performances from the likes of Sade, Clint Eastwood & General Saint, Yellowman...

I guess I've somehow wiped these from my mind! Back in the VHS days I always had a blank tape inserted in the machine so that I was ready to record anything that took my fancy, and I'm fairly sure that Toots was the only thing I ever taped from Black on Black (unfortunately I no longer have it).

In the early days of Ch4 I used to like the weird/experimental film evenings where they'd show around 3 hours of weird film shorts. They'd show some really weird stuff but it was compelling viewing. I think C4 tried showing RTE's Late Late Show for a time. Tried? They showed it for years.
