There's been a lot of talk about the ATV archive being "properly" catalogued for the first time ever and what might be in it.
This has been speculated as TRs or negs of Variety programming or VTs whatever.
And all the Quads ending up with the NFVTA, just they are too busy to let us know what they have uncovered which may be thought as missing.
Every episode of Crossroads etc, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Bloody well fed up hearing these reports with bugger-all follow-up, what is there left and whats missing?
Anybody?
Please?
Yours still on Kal 95,
S.

The ATV restoration programme is in very safe hands. I saw it going on over the Summer. Our nbooks will have all the updated info. There is a project in the pipeline now which will answer your queries. I'll let you know more when I am contractually allowed to. Suffice to say, some ATV stuff has turned up, but no more Crossroads enmasse. The lost Foundation ep, about 40 General Hospital and an Against The Crowd play are back in circulation, plus a lot of Reg Varney, Cilla etc.
Will let you know more when I can.

Thanks for the info C Perry. Please DO keep us informed. Carlton International have become very defensive on answering any questions re. the ATV archives over the last 18 months, to the point of rudeness from the new representaves of their music catalogue "Reelin in the Years". At least Carlton have now taken on a full time archivist and introduced a pass system to their Perrievale archives to prevent any further gems going missing. The main problem was Carlton DID NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT they did have in their archives, and on many occasions they denied having titles which i assurred them they owned the copyright to and which were formally properly catalogued by former owners Polygram. A coulple of questions here..... Are the older shows (ie telerecordings on 8mm and16mm format from the 1950s-60s) also being transferred now? Or is the transfer of material only being limited to quad tapes. Quad tapes were mainly used in the 70s i understand? Correct or incorrect? Secondly is it true that some old Sunday Night at the London Palladium shows from the 1962 season have been found? Any news to fill in the picture re. this classic variety series would be appreciated, because so few are known to exist.

The NFTVA are only transferring quads, but all film is being re-canned, watched, catalogued and entered on the databases. The problem with access is due to to all ATV stuff being on a differnent databse to the main carlton one. This is to stop clips staff selling stuff that the rights have not been cleared on yet. Perivale is retrieving stuff from 8 differnent international locations that were mostly hidden from ITC's knoweldge. 30 000 cans from Los Angeles alone.

30.000 cans from America alone.. fantastic stuff. I imagine a lot of this material is previously lost shows from the 60s. No wonder Carlton are pulling the drawbridges up when dealing with enquiries from the general public. I also imagine many of these American ATV finds would be variety shows. We all know how keen cigar-puffing Lord Grade was on producing big budget entertainment spectaculars at that time. Lets hope that some of the early 60s Sunday Night at the London Palladium are among these treasured cans!
Do you think we will ever be able to view a contents list of some of this new catalogued material. If not why the secrecy?

Hi
First time I've posted on this version of the forum, even though I've been reading it, since it changed recently, & before, if you remember some of my posts !
I had an old edition of 'Primetime' magazine, up until a few years ago, which had an article about Norman Wisdom in, which mentioned his ATV 70's series didn't exist.
Is this still the case ?

..so this comment about no more Crossroads en masse means that the story related here of the cache of most episodes from the early '70s onwards was false? Or was that no more SINCE the discovery of these? Can someone clarify the Crossroads situation?

Kaleidoscope is receiving fantastic co-operation from the staff of Carlton who are incredibly dedicated, kind and informative. They have assured us that we can print updated holdings for all their shows once the process is complete. However, since a lot of checking needs to be done - 44 cans saying Ghost Squad is not very helpful: we need to check all of them to see which ep is which! The process is ongoing. There is no Carlton cover-up, just confusion within a big company as to what people know. Most staff use the main database and until the legal department have checked out the rights re re-sale and clips, ATV stuff is not listed as being there. This is to avoid legal embarrassments. As an example, we could not get permission to show ATV's play Wet Job, because the rights paperwork is still to be checked and approved. Unlike ITC who sold everything without checking if they owned it, Carlton is more responsible.

Hi My interest is purely semi-professional, as Carlton approached Kaleidoscope for some assistance over last Summer. All the updated info will appear in our new Drama Book, due around Easter crossed fingers, and Carlton plan to publish it as well I believe. We have had a slight delay whilst we sorted out who legally owns Richard Down's information, but his estate has now granted Carlton permission to proceed so expect an announcement very soon. Chris

To sum up Chris, are you confident that the publication will list nearly every ATV item in Carlton's possession... including the very old telerecordings of shows like Saturday Spectaculars and Sunday Night at Palladium etc? On the ATV Saturday Spectaculars alone it is believed that over 120 seperate shows exist in their archive from 1957 to 1961. Lets hope the update not only lists just the show titles and TX dates but the guests who appear in them too. That is vitally important so tv researchers/producers are able to see what is on this previously untapped treasure trove. With the current unprecedented demand for vintage television material i'm hoping it will encourage Carlton to invest and transfer those films listed but not yet available on a watchable format.

You said it all for me too, rumbers! An untapped (and largely unacknowledged till now) archive of prized stuff. I await news on it with baited breath. I hope the ATV archive is continued to be treated with respect and also increased accessibility...
