Yesterday The Kinks official social media presences posted this photo (which I'd never seen before) with the caption 'The Kinks miming Australia on Top Of The Pops back in 1969/ This came as a surprise to me as I'd never seen any reference to The Kinks performing 'Australia' (which was an album only track) on Top Of The Pops. It's not listed in Doug Hinman's book. They did perform the minor hit single 'Victoria' (#33 in late '69/early 70) on the show which is what I would have guessed this photo was from had I seen it without the caption. So what I'm wondering is, is there any chance that The Kinks were also allowed to perform an album track ike 'Australia' on TOTP around this time or are the Kinks people mistaken? I would think the former were unlikely on balance, for the following reasons: 1) There was no TOTP album slot at the time (The Kinks would appear on this with 'Lola' LP songs in late 70) 2) 'Arthur' the (eventually cancelled) teleplay was intended to be on ITV, so it seems unlikely the BBC would want to give it any additional coverage 3) pre the 1970 album slot, were any acts (other than famously The Beatles in 1966) allowed to play more than one song on TOTP? It especially seems unlikely as The Kinks weren't exactly on a commercial high in late '69.

'Victoria' or 'Drivin', I would imagine (another thing that would cast doubt on it being 'Australia' is that the track is 6:46 long)

Sadly the Kinks online department have been steadily s-hite with their info and pics over these past few years. Completely contradicting the marvellous work that Andrew Sandoval et all put into the archive releases. I also shook my head when I saw this the other day. For a second I though it may have been an insert recording of the edited version to send to Australia for its release over there but that's hugely unlikely. They need to employ some people over 21 to do their online stuff.

you see it's a very similar set design to existing stuff from '71 - and the fashions are very 1971 indeed; compare with 29/04/1971.....
