If I recall correctly, some of Graham's recordings are superior to the optical and sepmag audio available on the film prints. I was wondering, is it possible that other recordings or even audio masters superior to what's currently held? Even better, is there any material better than what's been officially released?
Also, about those Randolph tapes, are they better than the current film masters?

There's the magnet audio tape for An Unearthly Child found after the DVD was released and will probably be included in the Blu-Rays

They would not normally be superior to sepmag, would they?

Does anyone know if the brief audio clip from The Web Planet at the start of this ep of the "From the Archive" podcast is from the Randolph tapes? It wasn't announced as being part of that collection in the original Kaleidoscope press release. tinyurl.com/y4kx8rdtThe frequency response is remarkably good for an off-air tape; to me it seems to approach the sound quality of a videotape master, with more of the high frequencies captured than was usually possible with most domestic tape recordings or optical film soundtracks (the latter of which I believe typically rolled off at around 8kHz).

I've know about that for some time. Listening to it now and the fully restored audio on the DVD, that recording sounds better than the current release! While it certainly doesn't seem to approach the master, it sounds almost like the American U-matic Pertwee recordings! The Randolph tapes are super mysterious, it's such a neatly organized and meticulously complete collection. EDIT: For those wondering, yes I know that the Web Planet audio clip isn't from the Randolph tapes.

It’s amazing that such recordings continue to turn up after so many years, and it seems from what I've read so far that the Randolph recordings represent a valuable alternate source for future restorations. We’ve been so lucky as fans to hear these domestic source recordings remastered to such a high standard. Mark Ayres does an incredible job in enhancing the quality, for the narrated soundtrack releases, the DVDs, and now the animated reconstructions. Good point re the Pertwee off-air audio. I remember being amazed at how much better the restored (U-Matic?) soundtrack on the Terror of the Autons DVD sounded, compared to the optical film soundtrack used for the original restoration. A lot more top end clarity there.
