You all know that “motion interpolation” mode that all new TVs seem to be set to by default? The one that ruins the look of movies by making them look like Mexican soap operas?
I decided to turn it on while watching the new BFI “At Last The 1948 Show” DVDs and wouldn’t you know, barring the tramlines and film dirt, the telerecordings look like B&W VT again!
Unfortunately it still ruins film sequences as per usual, but I’m highly impressed at the results with restoring the proper temporal motion to the VT material.
I need to whip out my BBC Not Only.. But Also best-of and see how some older 16mm transfers fare...

I have thought that ever since I got my TV in 2013 which, as you say, had it switched on by default ; took me several days to find out which setting it was and get it switched off!

One of my old girlfriends had a TV like this, I remember the bike flying sequences in ET looking like bad CSO & Against All Odds looking like it was shot on OB cameras.

Try it on Kubrick's 2001, it makes all the SFX and spaceship interior scenes look like something from the BBC Hitchhikers series or Red Dwarf. It's absolutely comical.

I can't see "motion interpolation" on the setup menu for my TV, does Samsung call it something else?

It appears to be the default mode on 4K TVs. My Samsung is HD and doesn't have it, although having seen how it messes up movies on a friends new TV I wouldn't want it anyway...

I believe Samsung calls it “Auto Motion Plus” It should be there in the expert settings on the picture menu (i switch it on when viewing my old contender cathy Gale avengers dvds ) I think my TV doesn't have it because it's just "full HD" (1080i max) & not a 4K set.
