Hi,
Is anyone here going to this? I believed it is linked with a big find of ITV music shows from the mid-70s including episodes of '45'/'Rock on With 45'.
I can't go myself, but I was wondering if anybody knew more about the find and what will be shown? I am looking for a particular edition of '45', recorded 21-5-1974 and transmitted in June, featuring Paper Lace, Mouth and Macneal and Sacha Distel. I was in the crowd at the shopping centre where it was recorded, so if this is part of the find, I'd be very interested in speaking to someone at Kaleidoscope about it and possibly being able to view it at another time - I have wanted to see this for over forty years!
Thanks.

Looks great but won't be able to make it.
It's hard to get time off work at the moment. Plus it's quite an expensive day out when you consider rail fares these days. What will the trains be like over that Easter weekend I ask myself.
A full report from anyone that goes is most welcome.

Short piece on Breakfast this morning (8.55ish) about the Beatles TOTP film but also showed clips of the recently recovered Kaleidoscope tapes of Elton John (Rocket Man), T-Rex (Metal Guru) and Stealer's Wheel (Stuck up in the Middle). Should be on iplayer later today.

I'll be there.
The line-up looks good, the 1969 TOTP being the big draw for me.

They made a mistake showing the Stealers Wheel clip as it's the one that isn't missing shown in pristine colour.

I just read what will be shown from reel one, nothing said on Bowie though about the footage they made such a big deal of just recently The BBC producer was the one that announced Bowie on Lift Off, not KAL. The fact is that there any many, many tapes, that are labelled. One of the tapes is labelled as that edition of Lift Off. No one has validated that (1) the tape is what it is labelled as, and (2) whether the tape is playable or recoverable. The BBC producer should not have said anything, but probably did to get publicity for the Bowie TV special. KAL has not formally announced the recovery of any Bowie material from this batch of tapes, yet.

From the ones shown yesterday, with an example comparison of raw recovered video with its look after processing it is obvious how much work has gone into getting that first reel played and back to a usable condition. This is something we will all have to be patient about. There should/may be another reel done for the June event.

One week on from the event at the BFI, I just wanted to say to those involved how much I enjoyed it. More than earned it's media exposure and not just due to the double presence of the fabs. The footage of The Sweet on Crackerjack in '74 was a real joy, a stunning devil's cavalry charge through Teenage Rampage, and a piece of footage for any music doc on that period. Loved Andy Scott's memories that he generously shared, informing us that they agreed to do the show on the condition they did it totally live. Other highlights in a never less than fascinating 100 or so mins; a live vocal Rocket Man from 11th May '72 TOTP, full length and in beautiful picture quality, live vocal T Rex from the same show, Manfred Mann, Nina Simone and The Who on Ready Steady Go (was Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere the same clip shown very briefly in the ITV top 50 programmes special broadcast in 2005? The wildly shaky camera effects looked familliar), Pete Murray's oracle like reminiscences (legend) and the biggest highlight for me; a drop dead classic insert of Fleetwood Mac performing Oh Well from the TOTP of 13th Nov '69. My week long memory tells me it was live vocal but may be wrong. Either way we saw a coolly confident, smiling Peter Green delivering the song straight to camera in a piece of video as pristine as any you could hope to find from surviving british pop tv from the '60s. The same goes for the thrilling Jethro Tull Sweet Dream clip. Nice to see Oh Well part 1 taken right to its close and a chance to see who mimed what instrument there; Danny Kirwan on acoustic guitar and Peter Green on the recorder! Funny I always presumed it would be the other way round! The Something film clip was of course fascinating in its slight alterations from the finished promo and the showing of both versions side by side made a charming and poignant ending. Thanks from this new member to Dick and Chris and Diddy for a great day. It was clear that some fabulously successful work has already been done on those recently found vhs tapes. Oh and as to the beatles on top of the pops 16th June '66, Chris Perry did say the following: watch this space

That clip of The Who is very common indeed. It was included in the 1979 'The Kids Are Alright' movie (available on DVD via Amazon at the click of a mouse), released on a high-selling 80s VHS tape of 'RSG' highlights, and rebroadcast by Channel 4 in the mid '80s and early '90s.
It seemed like it was a great event, but some other clips are also very well known to collectors (The Sweet, The Hollies, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Clodagh Rodgers, Paul McCartney and Wings... these have all been circulating freely for years).
